USAID official tells remaining staffers: Shred and burn all your documents

“Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break,” the email said. Carr instructed staff to label the burn bags with the words “SECRET” and “USAID/B/IO/” (agency shorthand for “bureau or independent office”) in dark Sharpie.
The email didn’t provide any reason for the document destruction. The building is being emptied out after mass layoffs, which may have disrupted routine document destruction timetables. Customs and Border Protection is planning to move into the USAID facility, having rented 390,000 square feet of office space in the building last month.
Efforts by Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency last month to access secure computer systems at USAID — including information about employees’ security clearances — triggered an uproar at the agency that prompted the administration to place two of the agency’s security staff on administrative leave. A DOGE spokesperson subsequently said that there was no improper access to classified material.
A former USAID staffer confirmed the veracity of the email and described the destruction of agency documents as unprecedented.
“I’ve never seen something like this — en masse. Everyone with a safe is supposed to keep it up to date and destroy documents when they no longer need to be stored. Sometimes security will check your safe and tell you if you have to clean out old material,” said the former staffer, who was granted anonymity due to fear of possible reprisals by the Trump administration….
Ontario Backs Down on Electricity Price Hikes

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he would double his planned tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% for Canada, a retaliation that prompted the provincial government of Ontario to back down on its planned surcharges on electricity sold to the United States.
Tuesday’s escalation and retreat in the ongoing trade war between the United States and Canada only compounded the rising sense of uncertainty in terms of how Trump’s tariff hikes will play out. His spate of tax increases on imports and plans for more have roiled the stock market and stirred up recession risks.
Trump said on social media that the increase of the tariffs set to take effect on Wednesday is a response to the 25% price hike that Ontario put on electricity sold to the United States.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday afternoon that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick called him and Ford agreed to remove the surcharge. He said he was confident that the U.S. president would also stand down on his own plans for 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
“He has to bounce it off the president but I’m pretty confident he will pull back,” Ford said on Trump’s steel and aluminum tariff threat. “By no means are we just going to roll over. What we are going to do is have a constructive conversation.”..
Court Denies Trump Request to Restore His Birthright Citizenship Order

The United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on Tuesday has denied the request by the Trump administration to lift multiple lower court judges’ nationwide injunction on President Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order.
The request was denied by the Chief Judge David Barron, who was former President Barack Obama’s first acting assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel of the U.S. (2009-2010).
“We do not address the government’s appeal of the preliminary injunction itself,” Barron concluded in the 32-page ruling Tuesday. “We address only the government’s stay motion, which asks us to decide whether the District Court’s order granting a preliminary injunction should be stayed while this court takes up an interlocutory appeal of that injunction.
“Based on the arguments that the government presents in support of the stay motion, we deny it.”
Trump’s executive order banning birthright citizenship will stay in place pending appeal.
The administration sought to stay the injunction, arguing the blue states 18 states that filed the lawsuit lacked standing.
But Barron said the government did not make a “strong showing” that the states lacked standing under Article III of the Constitution.
At the heart of the lawsuits is the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified in 1868 after the Civil War and the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. That decision found that Scott, an enslaved man, was not a citizen despite having lived in a state where slavery was outlawed.
The Trump administration has asserted children of noncitizens are not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and therefore not entitled to citizenship….
Google Antirust Case: DOJ Seeks to Force ‘Internet Goliath’ to Sell Chrome Browser

Ars Technica reports that the DOJ has made its first filing in the antitrust case against Google following the landmark decision that the internet giant operates as a monopoly, outlining the remedies it plans to pursue to break up the company’s stranglehold on the search market.
While the DOJ has backed off from some of its previous proposals, such as forcing Google to sell its AI investments, the government is still pushing for the tech giant to divest itself of the Chrome browser.
According to the DOJ’s filing, “Google’s illegal conduct has created an economic goliath, one that wreaks havoc over the marketplace to ensure that—no matter what occurs—Google always wins.”
The government maintains that the only way to level the playing field is to force Google to sell off its Chrome browser, along with any data or assets required for its continued operation. This move would effectively transfer Chrome’s user base of approximately 3.4 billion people to a competitor.
Under the proposed remedies, Google would be prohibited from releasing any new browsers during the term of the judgment. However, the company would be allowed to continue contributing to the open-source Chromium project. The government would also vet any potential buyers of Chrome to ensure the sale does not pose a national security threat…
Male, 45, accused of putting newborn in dumpster hit with new charges; 16-year-old mother claims 3-year relationship with him

A45-year-old male who was accused of putting an infant in a Memphis dumpster now is facing five new charges, including promoting prostitution of a minor and aggravated statutory rape, WREG-TV reported.
What’s more, the 16-year-old mother of the deceased infant told police she was in a three-year relationship with the male in question, the station said.
James Boothe originally was charged with abuse of a corpse, the station said in a previous report. But WREG said that charge was dismissed on Friday morning due to lack of prosecution.
However, the station noted that Boothe has been newly charged with two counts of trafficking for a commercial sex act, promoting prostitution of a minor, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and aggravated statutory rape.
Police said in January a 16-year-old gave birth while she was on her way to a hospital, WREG reported, and that’s when Boothe is said to have placed the newborn in a dumpster behind a Shell gas station…
ICE rounds up over 600 illegal aliens, most with criminal histories

According to an ICE press release, the agencies captured 646 illegal aliens, including 543 who had been previously “charged or convicted of a criminal offense while they were illegally present in the U.S.” The raid also resulted in the arrest of seven illegal alien gang members.
The federal immigration agency noted that 140 of those arrested faced charges or convictions for violent offenses, including aggravated felony, homicide, aggravated assault, or domestic violence. Over 30 detained illegal aliens were accused or convicted of sexual crimes, such as aggravated sexual assault of a minor, possession of child pornography, or rape. Other offenses included illegal firearms, drug crimes, property violations, and drunk driving.
Bret Bradford, the director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston Field Office, stated, “In recent years, some of the world’s most dangerous fugitives, transnational gang members and criminal aliens have taken advantage of the crisis at our nation’s southern border to illegally enter the U.S.”
“After illegally entering the country, many of these criminal aliens have gone on to commit violent crime and [rain] terror on law-abiding residents,” Bradford continued. “Fueled by our unwavering commitment to protect the public from harm, and united in our determination to restore integrity to our nation’s system of laws, ICE and our law enforcement partners in Southeast Texas have banded together to remove these dangerous criminal aliens from our local communities and put an end to the lawlessness that they spread.”…
Ukraine accepts deal, says Rubio: ‘We’ll take this to the Russians’

Ukraine on Tuesday accepted a deal put forward by the Trump administration during a meeting in Saudi Arabia, a significant step forward in securing a ceasefire agreement and bringing an end to the war with Russia.
“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they’ll say yes,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters.
Rubio, standing alongside national security advisor Mike Waltz, did not detail exactly what was in this agreement, but according to a readout provided by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, Kyiv has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire contingent on Moscow’s acceptance of the terms.
“We hope the Russians answer to that,” Rubio said. “The best goodwill gesture the Russians can provide is to say yes.”
In response to Kyiv’s willingness to accept Washington’s hard-fought preliminary proposal, President Donald Trump agreed to lift the pause on U.S. security assistance to Ukraine “effective immediately” and renewed U.S. intelligence sharing.
Rubio said if and once Moscow agrees to this preliminary agreement, the real negotiations can commence…

Russia hit by ‘massive’ drone attack ahead of US-Ukraine peace talks

Ukraine launched its largest cross-border drone attack since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, striking multiple regions, including Moscow.
Russia reported intercepting 337 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 91 downed over the capital alone. Moscow’s mayor described the attack as “massive,” with explosions heard across the city and air defenses firing through the night.
Authorities reported at least two deaths and eight injuries, though casualty figures vary, with some reports indicating one death and three injuries. Damage included high-rise residential buildings, businesses and infrastructure. Airports in Moscow, Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod temporarily suspended operations.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry labeled the strike a “terrorist attack,” and Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov alleged drones hit civilian areas.
Despite the escalation, U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators are set to meet in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss a potential ceasefire.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. expects Ukraine and Russia to make concessions, without specifying what each side must yield…
Gabbard strips security access from top Biden aides, prosecutors

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard announced Monday, March 10, that the Trump administration revoked security clearances for former top national security officials and legal figures involved in cases against President Donald Trump.
The decision affects former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and former Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.
Gabbard also barred access to classified information for New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. James led the civil fraud case against Trump, while Bragg secured a felony conviction in Trump’s hush money trial.
The move follows an executive order signed by Trump. The president accused these officials of misleading the public and engaging in political coordination against him.
The order also targeted 49 former national security officials who signed a 2020 letter suggesting Russia may have played a role in amplifying the Hunter Biden laptop story.
Trump claimed their actions constituted election interference. He directed Gabbard to investigate others in and outside government for “inappropriate activity.”
Gabbard also revoked the clearance of attorney Mark Zaid. He represented a government whistleblower in Trump’s first impeachment case….
New York fires more than 2,000 corrections officers as prison strike ends

New York officials fired more than 2,000 prison guards for refusing to return to work Monday, March 10, following a weeks-long strike that disrupted operations across the state. Despite the mass termination, enough officers returned to declare the unauthorized work stoppage over.
“After 22 days of an illegal strike, the governor and I are happy to report it has now ended,” Commissioner Daniel Martuscello said in a video update Monday.
Guards upset over working conditions began walking off the job at many state prisons on Feb. 17, forcing New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to send National Guard troops to keep operations running.
Inmates complained about deteriorating conditions behind bars since the walkout. A special prosecutor also opened an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old man on March 3 at a prison near Utica.
The walkout violated a state law barring strikes by most public employees. The union did not approve the demonstration either…
