Trump Admin Announces First Offshore Oil Lease Sale in Gulf of America

The Department of the Interior announced Friday that it will hold an offshore oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf of America as part of its efforts to boost production and drive consumer prices down.

The agency said it expects to publish a notice of sale in June, which will formally initiate the lease sale process. Undiscovered fields in the Gulf of America contain an estimated 29.59 billion barrels of oil and 54.84 trillion cubic feet of natural gas—resources that could be a boon to the American economy and help curb prices, according to the Interior Department.

The announcement is the latest example of the Trump administration’s “drill, baby, drill” agenda and represents yet another stark departure from the Interior Department’s climate-focused actions under the Biden administration. Former interior secretary Deb Haaland sought to halt the agency’s offshore oil and gas leasing program altogether and attempted to cancel planned sales, though those efforts were overturned by multiple courts.

The lease sale is also set to be the first to be held in the Gulf of America under the Trump administration and since President Donald Trump renamed the basin.

Since Trump took office, the Interior Department has held several onshore oil and gas lease sales across five states—Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Nevada.

The sales garnered more than $39 million and “reflect an ongoing focus on unleashing domestic energy production, supporting job growth, and reducing reliance on foreign resources,” the Bureau of Land Management said.

But offshore leasing is often more lucrative for the federal government and generally attracts more industry interest. The most recent Gulf of America lease sale, which a federal appeals court ordered the Biden administration to hold, generated $382.2 million for 311 tracts spanning 1.7 million acres…

Second planeload of Venezuelans deported from the U.S. this week lands in Caracas

Among those sent back to Venezuela on Friday were a number of migrants who had criminal records, Venezuelan minister of Transportation Ramón Velásquez said on state-run television, though he did not provide details.

On Thursday, two different flights on the state-owned airline Conviasa landed in Venezuela carrying migrants who were in Mexico and Honduras.

As of Friday, 2,190 Venezuelans have been taken back by Venezuela since February, following a meeting held in Caracas between socialist ruler Nicolás Maduro and President Doanld Trump’s envoy, Richard Grenell.

In that meeting, Maduro agreed to take back deported migrants in exchange for the U.S. allowing his regime to continue selling oil. That agreement, however, fell apart a few days after, after Trump claimed the Venezuelan strongman was not taking back the deported migrants quickly enough.

While the Trump administration has revoked the licenses that allowed foreign oil firms to keep operating in Venezuela since then, Maduro has continued to allow flights with deported migrants to land in his country, using the arrivals for propaganda purposes.

Earlier this week, Maduro announced that his regime would send the Conviasa plane to Mexico to retrieve 300 migrants, most of them women and children, whom he claims had fled the United States fearing persecution…

Passengers terrified as 40-foot waves batter cruise ship on trip through dangerous Drake Passage

Passengers freaked out as 40-foot waves slammed into a cruise liner navigating a treacherous stretch of ocean off Antarctica, as seen in freaky footage on Instagram.

“Imagine if you signed up for a 48-hour rollercoaster,” travel blogger Lesley Anne Murphy captioned the “Perfect Storm”-esque clip, which was filmed aboard Quark Expeditions’ Ocean Explorer ship, Storyful reported.

The 342-foot cruise ship had been steaming through Drake Passage — a 600-mile channel between Antarctica and the Southernmost tip of South America — while returning from a voyage to the Frozen Continent.

According to Quark Expeditions, the water body is known for its “fierce weather and extremely powerful waves,” which occur because the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern oceans all flow into it, creating a washing machine effect.

Accompanying footage shows passengers whooping excitedly as the aquatic mountains — which are visible through the vessel’s giant paneled windows — rock the boat, causing it to sway precariously.

The impact is so great that one of the passengers topples back onto her butt like something out of the “Poseidon Adventure” thriller…

LA County reaches $4 billion agreement to settle sexual abuse claims at juvenile facilities

The agreement, which still needs approval from the Los Angeles County board of supervisors, would be the largest in the county’s history and have long-lasting financial effect, officials said.

“On behalf of the County, I apologize wholeheartedly to everyone who was harmed by these reprehensible acts,” Fesia Davenport, the county’s chief executive, said in a statement.

A group of plaintiffs’ attorneys said they filed a lawsuit against the county in 2022 on behalf of more than 1,200 people who alleged they were mistreated and sexually abused in juvenile facilities.

The plaintiffs were able to sue because of a California law that took effect in 2020 and suspended for three years the statute of limitations for childhood sex abuse victims to bring cases.

The proposed agreement includes creating a countywide hotline for reporting child sexual abuse allegations against county employees and developing a system to expedite investigations, county officials said…

US Coast Guard triples number of guardsmen protecting the border — as migrant crackdown turns to the seas

The show of force comes as the number of migrant boats intercepted by the agency has shown no signs of slowing, despite a dramatic drop in illegal crossings over the US-Mexico border under President Trump’s major immigration crackdown.

“We’ve essentially tripled the amount of Coast Guard assets on the southern border,” Peter Nelson, Officer in Charge of Coast Guard Station San Diego, told Border Report. “This has happened in the last two months.”

The Coast Guard has stopped 260 smuggling vessels this fiscal year so far, which started on Oct. 1. The total number of boats intercepted in the 2024 fiscal year topped 561, meaning this year is on track to keep pace regardless of the clampdown.

On Sunday, 17 Mexican migrants, including two unaccompanied little boys and three women, were found “disabled and adrift” on their 35-foot boat roughly 50 miles southwest of San Diego.

The Coast Guard and Navy responded and rescued the group from danger as they waved white flags to call out for help, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Border agents then took the group into custody for deportation.

Meanwhile, agents working along the southern land border have seen record-low illegal crossings. In March, only roughly 7,000 migrants were encountered — the lowest number in at least 25 years…

Democrats, Former Disinfo Board Chief, Defend Government-Big Tech Ties, Dismiss Censorship-Industrial Complex at House Hearing on First Amendment Safeguards

Nina Jankowicz – former head of the disbanded Disinformation Governance Board and CEO of the American Sunlight Project – and Democrats who this week spoke during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, continued to deny and defend the Big Tech-government censorship collusion.

The hearing – “Censorship-Industrial Complex: The Need for First Amendment Safeguards at the State Department” – also saw Jankowicz, who appeared as a witness, and Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove, a Democrat, attempt to paint the actions taken by the new Trump White House as worse that what was happening during the previous US administration.

Both Jankowicz and Kamlager-Dove referred to the system known as the Censorship-Industrial Complex, and its elements, as “fiction,” “lies,” “tall tales,” and, “a conspiracy theory,” with Jankowicz trying to frame the new government’s moves as “an assault on the First Amendment” and “suppressing speech.”

Despite the fact these are some of the key accusations against the Biden administration – and at this point, fairly well backed up by batches of internal documents, but also testimonies from Big Tech execs – Jankowicz chose to call it “the imagined actions of the Biden administration.”

(DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also had a reasonable mission statement – to protect critical infrastructure from cyberattacks – only to then, according to the findings of the House Judiciary Committee, switch to surveillance and censorship of Americans’ online speech.)

Jankowicz tried to dismiss the validity, and value of the Twitter Files, which have proven to be crucial in shedding light on the inner workings of the “fictitious” Censorship-Industrial Complex.

But to her mind, the Twitter Files are “almost endless fiction” and, somehow – “a conspiracy.”

Another place where “no censorship was going on” was the State Department’s Global Engagement Center, the Foreign Affairs Committee heard from Jankowicz.

And, she doesn’t detect any problems with the scandalous actions taken by the former government to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story, suggesting that Twitter “adding friction” resulted in “more views.”…
