Italy Appeals Court Upholds Conviction of 2 Americans in Death of Policeman but Reduces Sentences

They were found guilty in the July 2019 slaying of Carabinieri Vice Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega and after the first trial, both were sentenced to life in prison, Italy’s harshest penalty. Those sentences were reduced on appeal, and last year, Italy’s highest Cassation Court ordered a retrial.
In the new trial, prosecutors asked that Mr. Finnegan be sentenced to 23 years and nine months and Mr. Natale-Hjorth to 23 years.
Teenagers at the time of the slaying, the former schoolmates from the San Francisco Bay area had met up in Rome to spend a few days vacationing. The fatal confrontation took place after they arranged to meet a small-time drug dealer, who turned out to have been a police informant, to recover money lost in a bad deal. Instead, they were confronted by the officers.
Cerciello Riga was stabbed 11 times with a knife brought from the hotel room.
In ordering the retrial, the Cassation Court said it hadn’t been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendants, with limited Italian language skills, had understood that they were dealing with Italian police officers when they went to meet the alleged drug dealer in Rome….

US Interior Department Greenlights Major Offshore Wind Project in New Jersey

The Interior Department stated that the Atlantic Shores South project will be located approximately 8 miles from the New Jersey shore and involve the construction of 195 wind turbines that will be supported by 10 offshore substations with subsea transmission cables “potentially making landfall in Atlantic City and Sea Girt, New Jersey.”
The project will consist of two wind farms that will have the capacity to generate 2,800 megawatts of electricity that can power up to one million homes, the DoI said.
The department said it’s the ninth offshore wind energy project at a commercial scale to get federal approval.
In an emailed statement to The Epoch Times on the Biden administration’s approval of the project, Protect Our Coast NJ President Robin Shaffer said though the decision is no surprise, it’s still alarming.
“We are concerned that Atlantic Shores with its towering skyscrapers in the ocean will spell trouble for critical habitats for fish, marine mammals and migratory waterfowl,” she said.
“Offshore wind construction and operations disrupt wildlife and ecosystems, and threaten the livelihoods of commercial fisherman and small businesses up and down the east coast.”…
Missouri AG Asks Supreme Court to Strike Down New York’s ‘Lawfare’ in Trump Hush-Money Case

Missouri attorney general Andrew Bailey is suing New York for prosecuting and sentencing former president Donald Trump amid the 2024 race, arguing his historic hush-money conviction constitutes “lawfare” against a political opponent.
Missouri’s lawsuit, filed Wednesday, asks the U.S. Supreme Court to decide on three matters: declare that New York unlawfully prevented the presumptive Republican nominee from campaigning during the trial, remove any remaining gag orders against Trump, and delay his sentencing until after the November 5 election.
“This lawfare is poisonous to American democracy,” Bailey asserts in the 99-page lawsuit. “The American people ought to be able to participate in a presidential election free from New York’s interference. Any gag order and sentence should be stayed until after the election.”
On Tuesday, Trump’s sentencing was postponed to September 18. The sentencing date was originally scheduled for July 11, four days before the start of the Republican National Convention where Trump will be nominated…
Democrats demand Pentagon expands Ukrainian F-16 training

According to Politico, House Democrats led by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, demanding that Ukraine’s request to have 10 additional F-16 pilots trained be granted.
In a letter obtained by Politico, House Democrats wrote, “The request comes at a critical juncture in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, where the deployment of F-16 aircraft has the potential to significantly influence the outcome of the war.”
The Democrat lawmakers added, “By the end of the year, Ukraine will have more F-16 aircraft than they will have qualified pilots to fly them, this situation threatens to undermine the strategic advantages these aircraft could provide Ukraine.”
According to The Post Millennial, the demand by House Democrats comes after the Biden administration gave Ukraine its approval to conduct missile strikes across the Russian border.
The use of F-16s would mark another major step in the escalation of the Russian-Ukraine war. Politico reported that Biden approved the transfer of F-16 aircraft from Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway last year….

San Diego judge throws book at violent Antifa associates, sentences 8 more to time behind bars, bringing total to 12

Ajudge in Southern California just sentenced eight members of Antifa to prison or jail time, bringing perhaps the first successful prosecution of an Antifa-related conspiracy case to a just close.
The case stems from a violent uprising that occurred on January 9, 2021, less than two weeks before Joe Biden was sworn into office. That day, a group of Trump supporters planned to host a rally in Pacific Beach, California, and dozens of black-clad Antifa members arrived as well to oppose them.
The event quickly got out of hand after the Antifa thugs reportedly sprayed the Trump supporters and other innocent bystanders with bear mace, pepper spray, and other chemicals.
The Antifa associates also engaged in other forms of violence including punching, kicking, and striking people with a skateboard, according to dedicated Antifa reporter and Post Millennial senior editor Andy Ngo.
In all, 12 Antifa associates were indicted, most of whom pled guilty. Two others — Brian Lightfoot, 27, and Jeremy White, 41 — however, decided to take their case to the jury and were subsequently convicted.
On Friday, San Diego Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein sentenced eight of those defendants, including Lightfoot and White. Four others had previously been sentenced.
The following are the Antifa defendants convicted in connection with the Pacific Beach riot:…

Illegal crossings at northern border shatter record as Biden admin boasts 40% drop in encounters at southern border: Report

According to Department of Homeland Security data obtained by the New York Post, illegal crossings at the northern border in June reached a record high.
The Post reported that roughly 3,600 individuals illegally crossed into the United States from Canada in June, breaking last month’s record.
In all of fiscal year 2022, illegal crossings at the northern border totaled 2,238, jumping to 10,021 in 2023, according to Customs and Border Protection data. In just the first nine months of fiscal year 2024, illegal northern border crossings have reached roughly 16,400, including the Post’s latest reporting.
The Post recently reported that the Biden administration allowed more than 100,000 illegal aliens to enter the country in June.
A Border Patrol source at the northern border told the news outlet that Biden’s executive order “doesn’t affect us.”,…
US to release US$2.3 billion in new military aid for Ukraine

The package approved by US President Joe Biden includes “more air defence inceptors, anti-tank weapons and other critical munitions from US inventories,” Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday during a visit to Washington by his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov.
A realignment of military supplies by other countries will also allow the US to provide ammunition for Patriot and other air defence systems “in an accelerated time frame”, Austin said.
The new supplies come under one of several tranches provided since the US Congress released funds totalling some US$61 billion to Ukraine in late April.
Since Russian launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US provided Kyiv with military aid totalling more than US$50 billion, according to the Pentagon…
Israeli strike kills another senior Hezbollah commander as diplomats scramble for calm in Lebanon

The strike near the southern coastal city of Tyre took place as global diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks to prevent escalating clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli military from spiraling into an all-out war that could possibly lead to a direct confrontation between Israel and Iran.
A Hezbollah statement identified the killed commander as Mohammad Naameh Nasser, who went by the name “Abu Naameh,” his nom de guerre. A Hezbollah official speaking anonymously in line with regulations, said he was head of the group’s Aziz Unit, one of three regional divisions in southern Lebanon.
Nasser is the most senior official from the Iran-backed group killed since Taleb Sami Abdullah, who was killed in an airstrike June 11. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a speech honoring Abdullah said he played a pivotal role on the front line since clashes began on Oct. 8 leading the Nasr Unit.
Hezbollah said in response to the killing of Nasser, it launched Falaq rockets with heavy warheads targeting the headquarters of the Israeli military’s 769th Brigade in Kiryat Shmona, as well as 100 salvos of Katyusha rockets targeting the headquarters of Israel’s 210th division and the Kilaa air base in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights…..

FBI whistleblower alleges bureau improperly suspended security clearance for agents with ‘conservative views’

Fox News obtained a complaint sent last week to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and DOJ Inspector General from a whistleblower – a supervisor and a registered Democrat – alleging that the “FBI’s Security Division improperly suspended or revoked employees’ security clearances whose political views, medical views, or even ethnicity were questioned by Security Division leadership.”
The whistleblower’s representation, Tristan Leavitt, the president of right-leaning public integrity group Empower Oversight, also notified the House and Senate Judiciary Committees of the complaint.
“The outcomes of clearance investigations and adjudications were often pre-determined by the Division’s acting Deputy Assistant Director and the acting Section Chief responsible for security clearance investigations and adjudications, who often overruled line staff and even dictated the wording of documents in the clearance process,” the complaint stated.
“Over the last few years, the FBI has used the clearance process as a means to force employees out of the FBI by inflicting severe financial distress: suspending their clearance, suspending them from duty without pay, requiring them to obtain permission to take any other job while stuck in this unpaid limbo, and delaying their final clearance adjudication indefinitely – even years,” Leavitt wrote.
“As I have written before, the FBI is not a private club for FBI executives to make in their own image,” Leavitt said in the letters to Congress…
Archaeologists discover ancient relic believed to be tied to Moses and the Ten Commandments

The last motif depicts a man in a chariot with two horses harnessed to it. The motif also features the same hand coming out of the clouds, pulling this figure up into heaven.
“We assume that this is a depiction of the ascension of Christ, the fulfillment of the covenant with God. The depiction of scenes from the Old Testament and their connection with scenes from the New Testament is typical of late antiquity and thus fits in with our pyx; however, the depiction of the Ascension of Christ with a so-called biga, a two-horse chariot, is very special and previously unknown,” Grabherr said, according to the press release.
The researchers discovered two Christian churches, a cistern and the personal belongings of the settlement’s former inhabitants.
Researchers are conducting further investigations into the origin of the ivory, the metallic components and the wooden parts that were also found in the marble box…
Illegal Alien MS-13 Gang Member, Wanted for Murder, Found Living in South Carolina

Elmer Neftali Martinez-Escobar, a 31-year-old illegal alien from El Salvador, was arrested on June 29 and charged with simple possession of marijuana following a traffic stop in Berkeley County.
After admitting to having marijuana in his possession, the deputy ran Martinez-Escobar’s name through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and discovered he was a member of the MS-13 gang and was wanted for murder in his native El Salvador.
The deputy found eight grams of marijuana in Martinez-Escobar’s possession and arrested him. Following his being booked into Hill-Finklea Detention Center, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents took Martinez-Escobar into their custody.
“This traffic stop is a great example of our deputies using their training to identify criminal offenders,” Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis told local media. “We never know what a traffic stop will bring, but I trust that our deputies will continue to work hard to keep Berkeley County safe.”
‘National Security Concern’: Chuck Grassley Sounds Alarm on Biden’s Unvetted Afghans Living Across U.S.

Grassley, in letters to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray, asked the agencies to make public the number of Afghans — brought to the U.S. by the Biden administration in 2021 — who were not properly vetted and who may pose a national security threat.
Grassley notes the DHS IG report which details extreme failures in vetting Afghans who have since been resettled across the U.S. and later convicted of crimes like sexual assault, indecent exposure, and child sex crimes.
“Unfortunately, this report confirms the concerns I, and my colleagues, outlined previously — that the Biden administration failed to properly vet Afghan evacuees,” Grassley wrote:
Specifically, the report notes DHS has a “fragmented process for identifying and resolving issues for noncitizens with derogatory information, including Operation Allies Welcome parolees.” Further, DHS’s approach “creates potential gaps in CBP, USCIS, and ICE’s responsibility for terminating parole, initiating removal proceedings, or monitoring parole expiration.” [Emphasis added]
The report also noted the FBI’s refusal to provide U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with full access to its National Crime Information Center Interstate Identification Index (Triple I) System. According to the DHS OIG report, this refusal was because “the FBI does not consider USCIS a criminal justice agency and deems immigration and naturalization issues as noncriminal justice matters.” The DHS OIG report also found that OAW parolees “were later convicted of committing crimes such as abusive sexual contact with a minor, indecent exposure, sexual assault, auto grand larceny, assault, and battery.” The Biden administration’s failure to properly vet evacuees and the FBI’s concurrent failure to provide full access to the Triple I system have put American communities at risk.
