Video: Air Force releases Battle of Roberts Ridge footage of airman slated to receive Medal of Honor
Newly released overhead surveillance footage shows the final moments of Tech Sgt. John Chapman, an Air Force combat controller, who will receive the Medal of Honor this month for his bravery during one of the Afghanistan War’s early battles.
Chapman received the Air Force Cross posthumously for his actions on Roberts Ridge in March 2002, as part of an elite special operations team charged with locating and targeting al-Qaida fighters entrenched on Takur Ghar mountain in eastern Afghanistan along the Pakistan border.
President Donald Trump will present the upgraded award – the nation’s highest military honor — to Chapman’s spouse, Valerie Nessel, on Aug. 22. The award is at least partially the result of new drone footage, officials said.
Chapman will become the first airman to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and just the 19th in the service’s history.
DOJ probes Florida women’s prison amid sexual extortion claim
The Department of Justice launched a federal civil rights probe into allegations of rampant sexual misconduct by correctional officers and horrific conditions inside a Florida women’s prison.
The investigation comes after years of complaints by former and current inmates who described the Lowell Correctional Institution in Central Florida as a “brothel,” “legal prostitution,” and “a predator’s playground” in a 2015 Miami Herald investigation detailing how inmates were forced to have sex in exchange for basic necessities such as soap and toilet paper.
The inmates also alleged a lack of basic medical care.
Kanye West: Liberals Can’t Bully Me
During an interview with late night host Jimmy Kimmel Thursday, West explained his decision to publicly support the President and his overall philosophy about free thinking.
“Just as a musician, African-American, guy out in Hollywood, all these different things, you know, everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me. And then told me every time I said I liked Trump that I couldn’t say it out loud or my career would be over,” West said. “Liberals can’t bully me, news can’t bully me, the hip-hop community, they can’t bully me. Because at that point, if I’m afraid to be me, I’m no longer Ye. That’s what makes Ye.”
Trump Admin Names First Female Border Patrol Chief
For the first time in the agency’s 94-year history, the U.S. Border Patrol will have a female chief, Carla Provost.
The new chief’s service record places her in border sectors in Texas, Arizona, and California. Provost will take the reigns as the 18th chief after decades of active service in several positions.
The new chief hopes her role will encourage more women to join the green line, according to AZ Central.
Woman, 81, busted smuggling $870G of heroin across US-Mexico border, cops say
An 81-year-old woman was busted attempting to smuggle 92 pounds of heroin — valued at more than $870,000 — across the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego, officials said.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection detector dog at the Tecate border crossing reportedly alerted officers Wednesday to the driver-side rocker panel of a 2011 Chrysler 200 trying to enter the U.S. from Mexico at about 11:30 a.m.
