NATO’s Rutte taunts ‘broken’ Russian sub; Russia says it was following law

A Russian submarine previously operating in the Mediterranean has surfaced off France after reports it suffered a fuel leak near Gibraltar, according to Reuters. NATO released photos of a French frigate monitoring the submarine, identified as the Novorossiysk.
Russian officials denied any malfunction and said the submarine surfaced to follow the English Channel navigation rules.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte mocked the episode, calling the vessel “broken.”
The incident comes amid heightened tension between Moscow and NATO.
The Novorossiysk, a diesel-electric Kilo-class submarine armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, had reportedly experienced “serious technical problems” during a mission near Gibraltar in late September, according to a Telegram channel known for publishing alleged Russian security leaks.
“Now, in effect, there is hardly any Russian naval presence in the Mediterranean left,” Rutte said. “There’s a lone and broken Russian submarine limping home from patrol.”..

Gov. Gavin Newsom signs law banning new Glock sales in California

Glocks are among the most popular handguns sold in California. Even former Vice President Kamala Harris owns one. But Californians will no longer be able to buy a new Glock gun in the state.
Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law that bans the sale of new Glock guns in California.
At issue, the new Glock design allows the gun to be easily modified with a Lego-sized piece of plastic known as a “Glock Switch” that can be 3-D printed to turn it into a fully automatic weapon.
Glock “switches” are already illegal, but Democratic lawmakers in California went one step further by passing a bill along party lines that outlaws the sale of any new gun with a Glock-like design. The new law does not ban possession of Glocks, nor does it ban reselling used Glocks in California.
Southern California Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, who introduced Assembly Bill 1127, said he hopes this legislation forces Glock to change its design so “switches” no longer work. …
Dozens rescued, homes swept away amid severe flooding in Alaska

Dozens of people were rescued as homes were swept away amid severe flooding over the weekend in Alaska. Remnants of Typhoon Halong brought hurricane-force winds and catastrophic flooding on Sunday.
Rescue aircraft were dispatched to two Alaskan villages Sunday — Kipnuk and Kwigillingok — where there were reports of 20 people possibly unaccounted for, according to CBS News.
A spokesperson for the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said the agency received reports that entire homes have floated away, potentially with people still inside.
In a post on X, the Alaska State Troopers said the Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska Army National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard launched rescue aircraft to the villages.
The state troopers said at least eight homes were pushed from their foundations, and about two dozen people were rescued, with three still missing in Kwikillingok. The number of people unaccounted for in Kipnuk remains unclear.
Disaster declaration
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration for the state’s west coast.
“Help is on the way,” he said. “Every effort will be made to help those hit by this storm.”
Dunleavy also announced that those impacted by the storm can apply for Individual Assistance and Temporary Housing programs. …
Mom pleaded to boyfriend as he fatally shot her in front of kids, CA officials say

Lawyer Dushan McBride, 51, was given a 95-year-to-life prison sentence in connection with the death of Rashanda Franklin, 30, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said in an Oct. 10 news release.
McBride’s sentencing comes after a jury found him guilty of murder in Franklin’s 2017 slaying, prosecutors said. An attorney for McBride did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment Oct. 13.
“This tragic case underscores the devastating reality of domestic violence, which claims far too many lives,” District Attorney Diana Becton said in the release. “While no verdict can bring back a mother taken from her children in such a senseless act of violence, this sentence provides the victim’s family with a measure of justice and accountability.”
In 2017, Franklin arrived at “a church parking lot where she dropped off her children for school” to find McBride waiting for her, prosecutors said.
Weeks earlier, Franklin had broken off her two-year relationship with McBride, and he had been “harassing her” since, according to prosecutors. “Fearing for her safety, Franklin called 911 and drove away with her children still in the car,” prosecutors said.
McBride followed in his car, and as the two approached a Richmond intersection, he cut Franklin off, prosecutors said. McBride left his car and approached Franklin, the district attorney’s office said. “I’ve got my kids in the car,” Franklin pleaded with McBride, she can heard saying on the 911 call, prosecutors said.
“I ain’t playing with you,” McBride said, then fatally shot Franklin, according to prosecutors.
The 911 call ended with the sounds of “ear-piercing screams from two of Franklins’ sons, then aged 9 and 5, who witnessed it all,” Bay Area News Group reported in February at the start of McBride’s trial….

Chip Roy and other Republicans push bill to block and deport Sharia law-adherent aliens: ‘Existential threat’

GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and several other House Republicans are pushing a bill to prohibit Sharia-law-adherent aliens from entering the U.S. and remove any such individuals who are present within the country.
“America is facing an existential threat – the spread of Sharia Law. From Texas to every state in the union, instances of Sharia Law adherents have threatened the American way of life, seeking to replace our legal system and Constitution with an incompatible ideology that diminishes the rights of women, children, and individuals of different faiths,” Roy said, according to a press release.
“Europe should be a wakeup call to America, showing what the spread of Sharia law looks like – the erosion of the West. America’s immigration system must be fortified to counter the importation of Sharia adherents – the preservation of our constitutional republic and its people depend on it,” he asserted.
“The Secretary of State, Secretary of Homeland Security, and Attorney General, as applicable, shall deny any immigration benefit, visa, immigration relief, or admission to the United States to any alien who adheres to Sharia law,” the text of the measure declares. “Any alien in the United States found to be an adherent of Sharia law by the Secretary of State, Secretary of Homeland Security, or Attorney General shall have any immigration benefit, immigration relief, or visa revoked, be considered inadmissible or deportable, and shall be removed from the United States.”….
