Sicko worker at upstate NY Santa’s Workshop theme park targeted kids online for sex: police

Clarence Russell — a 75-year-old employee at Santa’s Workshop in North Pole, NY — was arrested Sept. 5 and charged with attempted rape and attempted endangering the welfare of a child, according to cops and NBC5.

A deranged upstate New York Christmas theme park worker allegedly targeted kids online for sexual encounters before getting busted, police said Wednesday.

Clarence Russell — a 75-year-old employee at Santa’s Workshop in North Pole, NY — was arrested Sept. 5 and charged with attempted rape and attempted endangering the welfare of a child, according to cops and NBC5.

Ticonderoga police say Russell scoured the internet and messaged people he thought were arranging sexual encounters with kids under the age of 15.

Family members confirmed to NBC5 that Russell worked at the historic holiday theme park in Wilmington, NY, which initially opened in July 1949.

A Pennsylvania man, who was known to investigators when he was a teen as being involved in the planning of a “mass casualty” incident, has been arrested in an alleged terror plot.

Three years ago, Britain read “glued bolts” and “nuclear submarine” in the same sentence.

An inspection of HMS Vanguard, one of the Royal Navy’s four Trident submarines, found that Babcock repair crews had glued bolt heads back on after shearing them by overtightening.

About seven of the boat’s 3,000 bolts were involved, securing insulation on cooling pipes, not the reactor, and the logbook recorded a procedural issue with no mention of glue.

A former submarine commander called it a massive trust issue.

Would-Be Robber Finds Out Hard Way His Intended Victim Was Armed

A robber’s skills in victim-selection were lacking Tuesday when he tried to hold up an armed commuter at a gas station.

Orland Park, Illinois, police responded to the scene around 9:00 a.m. local time, eventually taking the would-be robber to a local hospital for treatment with at least one gunshot wound, ABC7Chicago, a local TV station, reported.

Surveillance video caught the incident on video, which was posted on social media.

“I would hope that he would just give up his keys, let him take his car, and the guy wouldn’t have to use his weapon. Luckily, he had a weapon on him, and he wasn’t afraid to take it out,” Naseem Elmosa, whose family owned the gas station, told the Chicago-based TV station.

The surveillance video posted online showed the robber walking toward the gas station customer before drawing a gun, only for the customer, who had a concealed-carry permit, to draw his own gun and fire at least two rounds.

The suspect was struck at least once by the armed citizen’s return fire.

“He was masked. It was clear on plain view sight that this person, he was armed, of course,” Elmosa said. …

Afghan man sentenced to 20-year prison term in case tied to suicide bombing at Kabul airport

A U.S. federal judge has sentenced Afghan national Mohammad Sharifullah to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of providing material support to ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) in connection with the deadly bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

 An Islamic State group member was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in prison for aiding the terrorist organization that took credit for a suicide bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members and about 160 Afghans at the Kabul airport five years ago during the American military’s chaotic withdrawal from the country.

A federal jury in Virginia had convicted Mohammad Sharifullah in April of providing material support to the IS affiliate known as ISIS-K.

But jurors could not agree whether he bore some responsibility for the airport bombing on Aug. 26, 2021.

U.S. troops were conducting an evacuation operation at the airport when a lone suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device near an entry point known as Abbey Gate.

Sharifullah’s role in the attack was scouting a route to Hamid Karzai International Airport, prosecutors said.

Sharifullah, 28, received the maximum sentence for his one-count conviction in an international terrorism case that President Donald Trump heralded last year during a speech to a joint session of Congress.

Sharifullah did not testify at his trial and declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga imposed the sentence.

The judge said the defendant was a “dedicated terrorist” who expressed no remorse for the “unfathomable” grief and suffering that he had caused. ..

House votes for third time to limit Trump’s Iran war powers

The House voted for a third time Tuesday to limit President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action against Iran without congressional approval, as the conflict stretches toward its seventh month.

The 220-204 vote drew support from seven Republicans, three more than the previous effort. Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa joined the four Republicans who had backed earlier resolutions.

Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton’s resolution directs Trump to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran.

The measure now goes to the Senate, which has not acted on a similar House resolution passed in July.

The vote continues a months-long fight over Congress’ role in the war.

The War Powers Resolution gives lawmakers a mechanism to direct the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities that Congress has not authorized.

Moulton argued that Congress should scrutinize a conflict Trump initially expected to last only weeks.

Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., defended continued military action, arguing Iran still poses a threat to the United States. …

Fed approves first interest rate hike since 2023 in bid to rein in inflation

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates Wednesday for the first time in more than three years, a widely expected move meant to rein in the country’s stubbornly high inflation.

But the rate hike could bring more pain for Americans already struggling with high borrowing costs. 

The Fed increased its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point, to a range of 3.75% to 4%, following a two-day meeting in Washington.

This rate determines what banks charge each other for short-term loans, which has ripple effects across the economy.

The rate increase was approved by a unanimous vote.

It was the Fed’s first rate increase since July 2023 and the first under Chair Kevin Warsh, whom President Donald Trump nominated to take over the central bank in May.

In a statement announcing the decision, Fed officials said that “economic activity is expanding at a solid pace.”

Officials also said that productivity growth is strong, capital investment is robust and job gains have kept pace with the workforce. 

The question now is whether Wednesday’s increase is a one-time move or the beginning of a new round of rate hikes…..
