Baby with Down syndrome, whose parents fought to get her care in Canada, has died

Key Takeaways:
- Krystal Vanderbrugghen believed the Canadian healthcare system was discriminating against her daughter, Veya.
- Veya received care at Sick Kids in Toronto at one point, considered the premiere children’s hospital in Canada.
- At Sick Kids, Veya’s mother was told her daughter would not receive a breathing tube or a living donor liver transplant.
- Vanderbrugghen said it appeared as if doctors were “slow-coding” Veya, and other doctors directly suggested Veya’s parents should consider euthanasia.
- Veya was eventually moved back to her previous hospital to receive care, but she tragically passed away early this month.
The Backstory:
In a previous interview with Live Action News, Vanderbrugghen explained that Veya was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect in December of 2023. After a successful heart repair, Veya’s liver began to have problems, and she also contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) — which is mild in adults, but can be life-threatening for infants.
At Sick Kids, far from receiving the care she needed and deserved, Veya struggled from what appeared to be blatant medical misinformation. She was overdosed with potassium, which nearly killed her, and then was denied a living-donor liver transplant and a breathing tube. One doctor insinuated the liver transplant was denied specifically because she had a disability.
“One ICU doctor said to me, we have to look at Veya, and all that she is and all that she was born with,” Vanderbrugghen recalled, and said the doctor added, “You know, Mom, you can admit when enough is enough. And when you’re tired, it’s been a really long road for you guys. There is something about allowing someone to die with dignity.’”
Eventually, Vanderbrugghen tried to take Veya to Chicago, where doctors said they could treat her — but Sick Kids refused to send her medical records or even speak to the physicians there.
The Details:
In June, Vanderbrugghen was able to have Veya taken from Sick Kids to McMaster Hospital. In an update to her Instagram page in July, Vanderbrugghen said Veya was improving. But in a tragic update last week, she revealed that Veya had passed away. Her family has not yet been revealed the cause.
Her mother wrote:
Our sweet Veya Hope ran into the arms of Jesus yesterday. Though her earthly body carried limitations, her soul was limitless — overflowing with love, light, and courage. Her name was her calling — Hope. She carried it with her every single day she spent inside those hospital rooms and gave it to all who knew her. She taught us to hold onto it when things felt impossible, to believe when we couldn’t see, and to trust that God’s love is greater than anything we face
While our arms ache without her, our hearts rejoice knowing she is whole and free in Heaven. She is healed, she is dancing, and she is being held by the One who created her.…..
Cartels focus on drug trafficking as human smuggling profits drop

Mexican cartels are shifting direction in what they move across the U.S.-Mexico border, focusing on high-value contraband and other illicit drugs, while illegal border crossings are down by 95% in a once high-traffic area from this time in 2024.
In Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, cartel smugglers continue to smuggle drugs like fentanyl into the United States.
A year ago, the sector monitored by the U.S. Border Patrol was seeing up to 2,000 illegal border crossings by migrants per day. Cartels were largely responsible for smuggling large groups of migrants across the border.
Yet with a drastic reduction in illegal crossings, cartels have shifted their business model to trafficking drugs into the U.S. as a way of making up for profits lost from moving people across the border, officials said.
“Now, they go back to their original tactics,” Christina Smallwood, a Border Patrol spokesperson covering the Rio Grande Valley, told NewsNation.
Border Patrol officials said cartels are using Mexican nationals with dual citizenship to move the drugs at legal ports of entry. Meanwhile, at border spots between legal points of entry, they said cartels are recruiting teenagers to bring over large amounts of drugs carried in backpacks.
Once caught, the teens are then sent back into Mexico but are not charged because of their age, officials told NewsNation.
Over the past two weeks, Border Patrol agents have made three of their biggest seizures this year — including $1.1 million in fentanyl that was found hidden inside stationary bike rollers and $2.3 million worth of cocaine that was packed into the ceiling of an 18-wheeler….
FBI: Fentanyl seizures up 25 percent since Trump took office

FBI Director Kash Patel says fentanyl seizures in the United States are up by 25 percent since President Trump took office.
Patel says they hope to continue the amount of “record-breaking” seizures with the help of the U.S. military.
According to the FBI, 1,500 kilos of the synthetic drug have been seized during Trump’s first 200 days in office, enough fentanyl to kill 1.13 billion people.
Patel defended Trump’s wishes to send troops to fight drug cartels in Latin America, a maneuver he says will expand the war on fentanyl.
“They play a difficult game,” Patel said without offering more details related to a New York Times article that a “secret order” has been issued to utilize military force against cartels.
Patel also made public the arrest of more than 1,600 people for “violent crimes against children including 270 for human trafficking” since Trump took office.
14 convicted cartel members transferred from US to Mexican prisons

The U.S. Department of Justice has transferred 14 prisoners to Mexican custody to finish out their terms south of the border.
The prisoners were all convicted on drug charges related to their ties to Mexican drug cartels — collectively they have 96 years left to serve.
According to DOJ, this transfer will save U.S. taxpayers $4 million
“The Department of Justice will continue with these transfers according to our agreement with Mexico to reduce costs of imprisonment and to help with overcrowding in our federal prisons,” said Matthew R. Galeotti, assistant U.S. Attorney with DOJ’s criminal division.
According to Galeotti, the inmates had all requested a transfer to Mexico as a way to finish out their years in prison.
The inmate transfer is part of the International Prisoner Transfer Program approved by Congress in 1977, which states “prisoners can be transferred to their countries of origin from the United States under certain circumstances.”
Foreign-born population dropped by historic number during Trump’s first 6 months in office, analysis finds

New population statistics show that President Donald Trump has been successful so far in reversing the inflow of immigrants, both legal and illegal.
The current population survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the foreign-born population dropped by an unprecedented 2.2 million people between January and July, the first few months of Trump’s second term.
Further, an analysis of the survey results by the Washington, D.C.-based research institute Center for Immigration Studies found that of those, about 1.6 million were illegal aliens.
The CIS said that the drop in illegal aliens was likely due to “increased out-migration in response to stepped-up enforcement” of immigration law and called the drop in the foreign-born population the largest of any six-month period within the same year.
The loss of 1.6 million in the illegal alien population constituted about a 10% drop, according to the CIS estimate, which would mean about 14.4 million illegal aliens are still residing in the U.S.
In March, the CIS reported that the foreign-born population had increased by 8.3 million people over the previous four years, which was “larger than in any four-year period in American history,” in its analysis….
Did Adam Schiff leak CLASSIFIED info to harm Trump?
A Democratic career intelligence officer has been warning the FBI for years that now-Senator Adam Schiff approved the leak of classified information to smear President Trump, according to a Just The News report.
Glenn Beck warns that Schiff CAN’T get away with this because if he can do this to a president, what can the government do to you?
“This is the END of Gavin Newsom… | Victor Davis Hanson”
In this video, Victor Davis Hanson unloads. No one—not even Biden—has wrecked more in plain sight than Gavin Newsom. Thirty-two years in power. Thirty-two years of smug incompetence. And now California—once the envy of the world—is a dystopian blueprint for national collapse.
Victor Davis Hanson exposes the left’s contradictions in their attacks on Donald Trump and his trade policies. In this video, Hanson dives deep into how progressive critics consistently misrepresent Trump’s use of tariffs, portraying them as reckless or harmful without acknowledging their strategic purpose.
He argues that the left’s opposition isn’t based on economic facts, but on a broader ideological rejection of Trump’s America-first agenda.

Trump overrules US Customs, decides gold will not face tariffs

As President Donald Trump levies tariffs of varying rates against American trading partners, one particular good appears to go unscathed. The president said Monday that gold will not face tariffs.
The move comes just days after U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) indicated that gold bars — coming into the U.S. from Switzerland — would face levies.
Trump posted two tariff-related messages on Truth Social early Monday. The first said, “Tariffs are making our Country Strong and rich. ” A few hours later, he posted, “Gold will not be Tariffed.”
Trump posted two tariff-related messages on Truth Social early Monday. The first said, “Tariffs are making our Country Strong and rich. ” A few hours later, he posted, “Gold will not be Tariffed.”
The new tariff rate on products coming into the U.S. from Switzerland is currently at 39%. The Commodity Exchange, the primary futures market for gold, silver and other precious metals, uses gold bars to back contracts.
National Guard ‘Quick Reaction Force’ could hit cities in one hour during unrest

The Trump administration is weighing a Pentagon plan to station 600 National Guard soldiers — split between bases in Alabama and Arizona — on standby to respond to protests or other unrest, according to internal documents reviewed by The Washington Post. Each 300-member unit would cover either side of the Mississippi River.
How would the force be activated?
The plan relies on a section of U.S. law that allows the president to bypass some restrictions on military operations inside the country. The proposal would place troops on Title 32 orders, meaning their state governor would remain in control of them, but the federal government would fund them.
Each unit’s first 100 members would be ready to move within one hour, followed by second and third waves within two and 12 hours, or all at once during high alert. The documents outline that the force would rotate service members every 90 days from Army and Air Force National Guard units in multiple states.
Joseph Nunn of the Brennan Center for Justice said Title 32 authority, which could spark conflict with governors, is based on a legally contested interpretation of presidential powers.
The plan bypasses the historical precedent in which governors determine when to request out-of-state Guard support, a process one governor’s spokesperson called a “well-established procedure.”
Carter Elliot, spokesperson for Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, said the administration is “blatantly and dangerously ignoring” that precedent…
Trump extends trade truce with China another 90 days

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday, giving China another reprieve from tariffs. The order extended the trade truce by another 90 days, pushing the deadline well into the fall.
Trump signed the order just hours before the truce was set to expire. In a post on Truth Social, the president announced, “All other elements of the agreement will remain the same.”
The extension does not come as a surprise. Back in July, South China Morning Post reported the U.S. and China had already agreed to extend the pause ahead of their meeting in Stockholm on Monday, July 28.
Tariff and truce details
The extension gives the U.S. and China until early November to strike a final deal. Without a deal, tariffs on Chinese imports will jump to 145%.
This is the second time Trump has delayed imposing the higher tariffs. For now, the import tax holds at an already high 30%.
The White House said negotiations with China are “ongoing” and that each round builds on the last.
China said it will also extend relief to American companies on its export control and “unreliable entities” list….
Walmart to pay $5.6M to settle lawsuit accusing it of overcharging customers

The civil complaint was filed by the County of Santa Clara along with three other counties, which cited a violation of California’s False Advertising and Unfair Competition Laws by the retailer. Walmart has 280 stores in California, 10 of which are in Santa Clara, according to a press release from Deputy District Attorney Tamalca Harris on Friday, Aug. 8.
Santa Clara officials note that this isn’t the first time Walmart has faced legal trouble for similar reasons. In 2012, the retailer paid $2.1 million for overcharging shoppers, which violated a 2008 judgment against it.
The 2008 judgment required Walmart to fix problems with pricing at the checkout counter. That ruling found that customers were overcharged upon checkout and “should have received $3 off the lowest advertised price of the item,“ according to a statement from then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris. “If the price was less than $3, the item was to be given to the consumer for free,” she added.
In November 2010, California regulators investigated whether Walmart’s stores were in compliance with the order and found that in 11 counties, Walmart’s errors at the cash register continued.
As a result, the “$3 off program” set to end in November 2012 was extended to November 2013. The retailer was also mandated to clearly display signs that explain its policy in English and Spanish at each of its checkout stands across its then-180 stores in the state.
Walmart was required to pay penalties and costs of $2.1 million as a consequence, and agreed to hire a person at each location across the state to maintain price accuracy. Any price discrepancy was to be submitted to the company’s headquarters within three hours of discovery as part of the settlement as well….
California taxpayers gave PG&E a huge, supposedly safe loan. The losses are already mounting

Two weeks before the 2022 legislative session ended, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration came to lawmakers with a big ask: authorize a $1.4 billion state loan to keep open California’s last nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon.
The money was supposed to be a stopgap that would be fully repaid by an expected federal award. There was even a fail-safe: if the award fell short, other federal funds or profits from Diablo Canyon’s final year could cover the difference.
The bill passed.
Despite promises from Newsom’s administration and legislators at the time, CalMatters found the state may be required to forgive as much as $588 million, about 42% of the loan.
That’s partly because the maximum available federal award would never have covered the full loan. PG&E applied for even less than was available because an incentive fee allowed under the 2022 law isn’t eligible for federal reimbursement.
One source of funding that could make up the difference—profit from the plant—is, by PG&E projections, unlikely to materialize. The only other avenue the state is considering—using federal money for nuclear waste storage—would cover a fraction of the shortfall and may not be legal.
And the total is still mounting: PG&E said in a January filing that it expects its costs for the plant to exceed the state’s loan.
The shortfall is emerging at a time when the state’s general fund is already facing a $12 billion budget hole, and advocates, lawmakers and regulators have raised concerns about portions of the loan benefiting PG&E shareholders, which the law forbids.
“It’s not a loan,” Matthew Freedman, lawyer for The Utility Reform Network, said. “It’s a gift.”….
Euthanasia Now So Popular in Canada, Doctor-Killers Struggle to Meet Demand

According to government figures for 2023, the last full year of statistics available, MAID accounted for 4.7 percent of deaths nationwide, making Canada second only to the Netherlands. In Quebec, the figure is over seven percent, giving it the highest euthanasia rate in the world.
MAID deaths have been growing by double digits each year since the practice was legalized in 2016, and especially since it was approved for patients who are not terminally ill in 2021.
The growth of legalized health worker killings slowed to only 16 percent in 2023, a substantial slide from the average of 31 percent growth in previous years, although the Canadian government was uncertain as to why the rate of growth declined so sharply.
Critics say Canadian doctors are not only making assisted suicide available, but actively pushing it as an option – even for people whose only medical or psychological complaint was thinking about suicide.
Canada’s doctors actually kill their patients, rather than providing them with tools for suicide and allowing them to pull the fatal trigger themselves.
The Atlantic on Monday published an eerie article entitled “Canada Is Killing Itself” that followed doctors gathering for a euthanasia conference in Vancouver, complete with lunch buffets, a disc jockey, and complimentary tote bags for the attendees….

Where the Nazis Failed, America’s Largest Teachers’ Union Now Aims to Succeed

Dr. Gregory Stanton, founder of Genocide Watch, argues that genocide unfolds through a ten-step process. It begins with early warning signs like discrimination and dehumanization, then escalates into violent persecution and extermination. But Stanton’s final stage might come as a surprise. He says genocide culminates with denial, and that denial is an integral part of the process itself.
Of course, denial can help relieve the conscience of the perpetrators, or be part of their efforts to shield themselves from legal culpability. But according to Stanton, denial is actually a final act of violence towards the victims. It completes their destruction by assaulting even the memory of the victim group, causing not only further psychological anguish but also cultural erasure.
This last step the Nazis were largely unable to achieve. How they singled out, persecuted, and ultimately mass murdered Jews is on display in museums worldwide. Jewish youth return to Auschwitz each year for the March of the Living, keeping the death camps and the memory of what took place there preserved.
But where the Nazis failed, the United States’ largest teachers’ union now aims to succeed.
The National Education Association (NEA), which represents nearly three million public school teachers, just released a new handbook instructing teachers to no longer tell their classes that Jews were the primary target of the Holocaust. Instead, they are now supposed to say that the Nazis killed “millions of victims of different faiths.”
The fact that Jews were taken to the gas chambers solely because of their religion is to be covered up; that the Holocaust was an assault on European Jewry is something they want to erase.
Why the change? The political context makes it clear. In the NEA’s view, the memory of Jewish persecution at the hands of the Nazis is being improperly used to exempt Israel from scrutiny over its conduct in Gaza, and the legacy of the Holocaust is causing undue hesitation in accusing Israel of genocidal conduct.
Believing that Jewish persecution by the Nazis has been misappropriated in defense of Israel, the NEA seeks to sever this link between the Holocaust and Jews….

Adam Schiff authorizes classified intel leaks to smear Trump during Russiagate, whistleblower claims

A seasoned intelligence officer who aided Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee repeatedly alleged to the FBI that then-Rep. Adam Schiff approved leaking classified information to tarnish President Trump’s image during the Russiagate probe, shocking newly released documents reveal.
Now-Sen. Schiff (D-Calif.), then the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, openly discussed plans to reveal sensitive information about the Trump-Russia collusion probe starting soon after the 45th president’s inauguration in 2017, the unidentified male whistleblower alleged.
During an FBI interview in June 2023, the source recalled being part of an all-staff meeting called by Schiff, at which the Democrat “stated the group would leak classified information which was derogatory to President of the United States Donald J. TRUMP. SCHIFF stated the information would be used to Indict President TRUMP.”
The whistleblower said he objected to Schiff’s idea, a summary of the interview reveals, only to be told by other participants that “they would not be caught leaking classified information.”
Sometime later, the whistleblower said he was approached again about leaking against Trump and responded that they “believed this activity to be unethical and treasonous.”
The whistleblower later reached out to the FBI and was even invited to attend a mock grand jury hearing, only to later be told that the Justice Department would not investigate further.
Investigators believed Schiff, now 65, was protected by the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause, which bars the apprehension of legislators for their professional activities except in the event of “Felony, Treason and Breach of the Peace.”
The whistleblower claimed during his June 2023 interview that he “did not believe” Schiff’s actions were covered by the Speech or Debate Clause.
The whistleblower’s claims were first reported by Just the News, with FBI Director Kash Patel confirming on X Monday night: “We found it. We declassified it. Now Congress can see how classified info was leaked to shape political narratives – and decide if our institutions were weaponized against the American people.”…
