How to Avoid Manipulation When Reading Coverage of Hamas Attacks on Israel

Summary from AllSides News Team

The Hamas militant group’s attacks on Israel over the weekend killed at least 700 people, and remain the world’s biggest story as Israel’s response has killed at least 500 people in the Gaza Strip. Here’s how U.S. media is covering it differently.

Preparation: Some left- and center-rated sources focused on reports that Israel was unprepared for the assault and that its authorities are scrambling to track down kidnapping victims. Right-rated sources focused less on that angle. Many across the spectrum highlighted sources who suggested Iran helped Hamas coordinate the attacks.

Attacks and Response: Many sources highlighted details of kidnappings, murders, and sexual assaults of Israelis by Hamas. Many also prominently covered Israel ordering a “complete siege” of Gaza, with some left-rated sources highlighting poverty in Gaza, the potential civilian death toll, and reports of a surge of support for Palestine across the Middle East. Some right-rated outlets focused on how the attacks may spell trouble for the Biden administration.

Militants or Terrorists? Right-rated sources usually referred to Hamas as a terror group and the attacks as terrorism. Left- and center-rated sources didn’t, and instead used the term “militants.”

Why the Differences?: The American left is generally more sympathetic toward Palestine and views Israel as oppressive. The American right tends to side with Israel against what they see as extremism in Gaza. Read more about this divide from our RedBlue Translator.

Israelis rush back from U.S. to join the fighting

Noy Leyb, Yotam Avrahami

Noy Leyb, opened a WhatsApp group to help IDF reservists around the world find a way home.

He himself managed to get on an El Al flight overnight, having paid $2500, an exceptionally high price. “My dad told me I was nuts to come but there is no question in my mind,” he said. “I am a Zionist and there is no way that my friends would be there and I would not, no matter the financial cost.”

Yotam Avrahami, a businessman from New York said it took him all of 10 minutes to decide he must get back and join the fighting. “I grew up 50 minutes from Gaza. I have a wife, a seven-month-old baby girl a full operation and customers but I am setting all of them aside to get back,” he said.

Avrahami is a reservist in the Armored Corps and spent hours searching for a flight sooner than the one available later on Sunday. “That’s too late,” he says. “My crew is there, and I have friends who are officers and need people.

“The Israeli community in New York organized quickly, making arrangements to host Israelis stuck in the city because of flight cancellations. They organized a meeting to offer support in the Jewis

How Terrorists Got Into Israel Highlights a Terrifying Fact About the U.S. Border

AP Photo/Morgan Lee

The Gaza Strip is 25 miles long. The U.S. southern border with Mexico is 1954 miles long and it’s wide open. The U.S. border with Canada is 5,525 miles and largely unguarded.

Since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, more than two million individuals have entered the country as “gotaways.”

The more than seven million illegal immigrants who have entered the country and processed by Border Patrol have not been vetted.

We know nearly 400 individuals on the terrorist watch list have been apprehended attempting to enter and the FBI is currently looking for potential members of an ISIS terrorist ring that was smuggled into the country.

Mark Morgan to Newsmax: Border Chaos Could Hide Incoming ‘Terrorist Cells’

Morgan said that the idea of having people come across the border without being vetted, that we know nothing about is not a national security risk, is “not being honest” with the American people.

“Think about it. If a single adult male from Serbia comes across our border, do you think we’re getting their history from Serbia,” he said. “Of course, that’s not happening.”

Former Homeland Security Department adviser Charles Marino, who joined Morgan on the broadcast, said that security is directly tied to how tightly controlled a country’s border is.

“I think it shows the importance of not just border control on land, but at sea, and what happens in the skies above,” Marino said. “We’ve seen incursions in all of those areas be allowed to take place here in the United States. We saw it in the air with the Chinese spy balloon. We see what’s going on in the land, and we know that we’ve had incursions from countries like Russia and others in the seas. So, you know this needs to be robust 360-degree border security. No country is sovereign without its secure borders, and no country is safe without secure borders.”

Christian baker faces new lawsuit over gender-transition cake after Supreme Court

Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop (Alliance Defending Freedom)

Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Colorado, declined to create a custom cake for a same-sex wedding in a move that sparked a 2012 lawsuit that ultimately landed him at the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 2018, the nine justices ruled that the state of Colorado was hostile to Phillip’s religious beliefs and that the government can’t force anyone to create custom works of art that communicate a message.

But in 2018, Phillips faced a second lawsuit, this time from a transgender lawyer who requested a cake celebrating a gender transition.

When Phillips declined, he was back in court on grounds that he discriminated against the lawyer. The Colorado Supreme Court just agreed to hear his case.

Jake Warner, attorney for the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) defending Phillips, said that the lawsuit from the beginning was “clearly a set-up” with the intent of “targeting” Phillips and his beliefs.

3 students arrested for high school hit lists, authorities say

Associate Schools Superintendent Paul Abbatinozzi said the families of the students targeted in the lists have been notified.

He said the number consists of five or six students.

The investigation began on Friday last week after someone who had seen the group’s text messages went to the administration at Creekside High School.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office got involved after.

Sheriff Robert Hardwick said evidence of the hit lists was found on the students’ cell phones.

According to arrest reports, the three students were part of a Russian communist group they had formed due to being bullied, calling it the United Boyopolis Socialist Republic.

Columbus Police

On Friday, the Columbus Division of Police SWAT team arrested 24-year-old Payton H. Shires whom police say used to work for the National Youth Advocate Program, WBNS reported Friday.

Charges against her came after the teenager’s mother notified law enforcement on September 27 once she found texts between her child and the suspect.

The WBNS report continued:

In the messages, Shires allegedly asked the teen if he had “deleted the videos,” and if his mother had “seen the videos or messages.” The teen’s mother turned the phone over to the officers who responded to the call.

Supernova festival: How massacre unfolded from verified video and social media

According to some accounts, there were up to 4,000 people in attendance. From the footage, they appear to be mostly under 30.

They had gathered in a remote area of southern Israel for the Supernova festival – an event that had promised dance, music, art and drinks at a secret location.

Ticket holders were told, nearer the time, to head to a site north of the Re’im kibbutz, about 6km (3.7 miles) east of Gaza. The party’s organisers promised a “journey of unity and love”.

Over 100 Bodies Uncovered in Single Israeli Village After Hamas Massacre

The remains were discovered in Be’eri, or Bari, a kibbutz in southern Israel close to Gaza. It’s one of the villages Hamas militants invaded on Saturday as they began their attack on the country.

“Today the volunteers entered Kibbutz Bari and it is impossible to explain in words the terrible sights – some were adults, some were children. These are horrors that cannot be grasped in the mind or soul,” a spokesperson for Zaka search and rescue told IDF radio.

Israeli Mother Recounts Chilling Encounter With Hamas Terrorists: ‘Puddles of Blood Everywhere’

Unconfirmed reports note that approximately 1,000 Israelis have been killed, 2,500 have been injured, and 200 were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists.

Many of the kidnapped were taken into Gaza territory via motorcycles.

Amid scores of stories profiling the brutal and indiscriminate slaughter of hundreds of civilians, the New York Post reported a story of an Israeli mother who evaded Hamas terrorists and escaped with her two children.

The heroic mother is Avital Aldjem. Her neighborhood was overrun in the early hours of the incursion. Terrorists went door to door, executing and kidnapping civilians.

Hamas threatens to begin executing hostages in response to strikes

The Hamas terror group is threatening to begin executing hostages in response to Israeli strikes in Gaza carried out without warnings, the spokesperson for Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades says, according to Gaza’s Shehab news outlet.

“From this hour, any targeting of our people in the safety of their homes, without warning, will be met with the execution of civilian hostages, which will be broadcast with video and audio,” says the spokesperson, who goes by the nom de guerre Abu Obeida.

A defense official reportedly told Knesset members in a briefing earlier in the day that Israel was not dropping dummy bombs on roofs of buildings set to be targeted, meant to warn civilians to flee.

In a series of social media posts, the Israeli Air Force provided some details, including saying that one of the numerous multi-story buildings that was hit was the “residence of Ruhi Mashtaa, secretary of the Hamas and part of the organization’s decision-making group,” which “contained a Hamas terror command center, from which he helped direct the infiltration into Israel.”

“Seven Hamas command centers and an Islamic Jihad command center were struck,” the Israeli Air Force said.

“A building that was operationally used by a senior operative of the Hamas terrorist organization’s naval forces was also targeted.”

“Two Hamas operational assets were struck by an aircraft, one of them was located inside a mosque,” they added. “An Islamic Jihad asset located in a building in which terrorists operate and live was also targeted.”

Border with Lebanon breached, infiltrators neutralized by IDF; Islamic Jihad claims responsibility

The Israel Defense Forces reported that two mortars were fired from Lebanon toward northern Israel on Monday afternoon, activating warning sirens in the towns of Iftach and Ramot Naftali in the Upper Galilee region.

According to the military, one of the projectiles landed harmlessly in an open area within Israel, resulting in no injuries.

The second projectile, however, fell short of its target and landed in Lebanese territory.

In addition, a group of four terrorists detonated an explosive charge to open a hole in the Israel-Lebanon border fence, near Kibbutz Adamit, and entered Israeli terrotory.

The IDF sent a Special Forces detail to eliminate the threat, simultaneously dispatching an attack helicopter to survey the area from above.

The threat was neutralized, with one of the infiltrators reportedly fleeing back to Lebanese territory. Hezbollah denied that it was involved in the incident, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility.

IDF Takes Territory Back from Hamas Invaders, but 100 Israelis Hostage, Long Fight to Come

JERUSALEM, Israel – More than 48 hours after Hamas’s invasion on October 7th, the IDF spokesman says although Israeli forces have regained control of all Gaza border towns, it’s still possible that some Hamas terrorists are still lurking inside the country.

The IDF deployed four divisions to the south to expel Hamas operatives from Israeli soil. Israeli warplanes are carrying out widespread strikes on Hamas targets and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday ordered a “complete closure” of the Gaza Strip.

“No electricity, no food, no water, no fuel” will be allowed into the coastal enclave, Gallant said. “We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly.”

Most of those interviewed by Fox News Digital said they believed their relatives – mothers, fathers, children and cousins – were being held by the terrorist group Hamas inside the Gaza Strip. Many of them based their suspicions on photographs and videos uploaded to social media by the Islamist group and all of them said they had heard nothing from Israeli authorities or international groups about the whereabouts of their family members.

They all appealed for the help from groups such as United Nations, the International Red Cross and others to offer them some information about their fate.

Biden silent on nine Americans killed in Israeli attacks

 (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File)

President Biden on Monday did not address the deaths of at least nine American citizens among the 900 Israelis slaughtered when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Saturday.

Mr. Biden hasn’t made any public appearances since Saturday when he delivered a roughly three-minute speech on the situation without taking questions. He had no public events on Sunday or Monday but did host a private barbecue at the White House on Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, authorities confirmed that at least nine Americans were among the growing number of dead in Israel.

With the federal government closed Monday for the Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday, there are no White House events scheduled.

The White House called a “lid” Monday before noon, meaning Mr. Biden won’t be seen or heard from for the rest of the day. A lid is a notice to reporters covering the White House that the president won’t make any more news that day.

Democrat Torres Slams ‘Squad’ Members on Israel

A Democrat lawmaker condemned colleagues who took a pro-Hamas stance after the weekend terrorist attack in Israel.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., on Sunday criticized fellow Democrat Reps. Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. — both members of a progressive House group sometimes called the “Squad” — for saying that conditions in Israel led to “resistance” by Hamas.

“Shame on anyone who glorifies as ‘resistance’ the largest single-day mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust,” Torres said, the Jewish Insider reported.

Top Democrats: Bus Surplus Migrants to Red States

Pritzker’s call to bus migrants — whom he calls “folks” — to other cities comes as Democrats keep complaining about the Republican governors who bussed migrants to northern cities to help showcase Biden’s pro-migration policy.

Leaders in many Democratic-run cities, such as New York, Boston, Denver, Colo., and San Diego, Calif.,  are alarmed at the arrival of more poor migrants from the southern border.

They are alarmed because Americans are increasingly aware that migration is a pocketbook disaster because cuts their wages, spikes inflation, drives up rents, shrinks housing, crowds schools, and diverts federal attention and aid away from their children to Biden’s illegal migrants.

School District Paid Thousands to Organization Linked to Merrick Garland for Surveys Asking Kids Their Feelings About Race

The district paid Panorama Education, an education software company founded by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s son-in-law, Xan Tanner, a total of $64,573 for the surveys, an annual membership fee and a professional development workshop for the 2023-2024 school year, according to documents obtained by PDE and shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The survey goes over a number of topics about school climate, including a section titled “Feelings About School,” which has students answer how often their teacher pushes them to think about race and ethnicity, ranging from “almost never” to “almost always.”

“How often do teachers encourage you to learn about people from different races, ethnicities, or cultures,” the survey reads. “How often do you think about what someone of a different race, ethnicity, or culture experiences?”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom Vetoes Bill that Would Have Decriminalized Psychedelic Mushrooms

James MacDonald/Bloomberg via Getty Images

The legislation vetoed Saturday would have allowed those 21 and older to possess psilocybin, the hallucinogenic component in what’s known as psychedelic mushrooms. It also would have covered dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and mescaline.

The bill would not have legalized the sale of the substances and would have barred any possession of the substances on school grounds. Instead, it would have ensured people are neither arrested nor prosecuted for possessing limited amounts of plant-based hallucinogens.

Newsom, a Democrat who championed legalizing cannabis in 2016, said in a statement Saturday that more needs to be done before California decriminalizes the hallucinogens.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom Signs Law Requiring Big Businesses to Disclose Emissions

Sarah Reingewirtz/MediaNews Group/Los Angeles Daily News via Getty Images

The law requires more than 5,300 companies that operate in California and make more than $1 billion in annual revenues to report both their direct and indirect emissions.

That includes things like emissions from operating a building or store as well as those from activities like employee business travel and transporting their products.

California has made major strides to set trends on climate policy in recent years. The state has set out to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035, expand renewable energy and limit rail pollution. By 2030, the state plans to lower its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below what they were in 1990.

This was Democratic State Sen. Scott Wiener’s third attempt to get the sweeping emissions disclosure rules passed in California.

Last year, it passed in the Senate but came up short in the State Assembly. Wiener said the new emissions information will be useful for consumers, investors and lawmakers.

“U.S. aid to Israel is and should be unconditional, and never more so than in this moment of critical need,” Torres said, according to Capitol Hill reporter Marc Rod. “Congress must act decisively to provide Israel with whatever it needs to defend itself in the face of unprecedented terrorism.”

The lawmaker continued: “Shame on anyone who glorifies as ‘resistance’ the largest single-day mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust. It is reprehensible and repulsive.”

The comment came after two members of the group of far-left House members known as the “Squad” appeared to blame Israel for being attacked, calling for an end to U.S. aid to the Jewish state.

Commentary.

Reflections on Israel’s New Existential War

There have been plenty of terrorist attacks on Israel. A dozen or so conventional wars of various magnitude have been waged against the Jewish state. And more often there have been mixtures of both.

Yet never have hundreds of gangs of black-clad murderers carefully planned to swarm Israel, with an agenda to pull random Jews out of their homes and off the street, murder them, and toss their bodies in the street.

In fact, the closest parallel to the sort of methods Hamas is now embracing is something close to the Rwanda 1994 mass killing, when swarms of Hutu militia killers launched a preplanned murder spree against thousands of Tutsi civilians.

Note one common theme of these horrific videos of the murdering of young women: the bloodthirst of the Gaza crowd. There appears a natural desire of everyday Gazans to video the mutilations, an embrace of the spitting on the doomed, a frenzied effort to mutilate the dead—and the absence of a single Gazan objecting to the group murder of a civilian.

Hamas did not act out of the ordinary, but in sync with its people. In truth, there is something so terribly wrong in Gaza that the United States should keep as far away as it can from such barbarity—and hope that it too feels the same about America and keeps to itself.

So again why did Hamas mount such a long-planned and multifaceted assault on Israeli towns, public buildings, soldiers, and civilians?
