The resulting dynamic has the potential to reshape a place where war has been a constant for thousands of years—defined more recently by Iran’s hostility toward Israel and the US, its nuclear ambitions, and its role in global oil markets.
Grocery prices steady over last 4 weeks
Five months into a new presidential administration with multiple foreign policy storylines taking turns grabbing attention, the price of a dozen eggs – a familiar campaign trail echo – remain stable in North Carolina’s capital city.
So does milk and other groceries. For all the fear of a domino effect tied to Liberation Day tariff talk, a military strike in the Middle East, and federal law being followed at the nation’s borders, average prices on household staples are not hitting record lows or highs.
Eggs are up over the last four months, and beef is down. Eggs are an average of $4.69 for a regular dozen; regular milk is $3.37 for a gallon; a loaf of fresh white bread is $3.73; and one pound of beef round is $7.50.
Raleigh’s prices on March 3 were $4.17 for a dozen eggs, $3.44 for a gallon of milk, $3.68 for a loaf of bread and $8.04 for a pound of beef round. The prices, on average, have not changed in the last four weeks.
The figures are from Numbeo, a crowd-sourced database with costs of living and other factors for cities and countries globally.
Consumer prices have been a focus of the Trump administration. There have been tariff battles and new trade agreements, all part of the second-term Republican’s desire to fulfill campaign promises on the economy.
For context, President Donald Trump has been back in office for 162 days and not all deals and negotiations have settled into place.
The latest rate of inflation released in June for May is 2.4%, a drop from 3% in January and from 3.3% in the same month a year ago. The release of June’s percentage is scheduled July 15.

Canada Caves: Digital Tax On U.S. Tech Scrapped After Trump Pressure
Canada ended a digital service tax that would have hit major American tech companies hard after President Donald Trump announced he was ending trade talks with the country over the levy.
Canada’s Department of Finance said Sunday that it would rescind its Digital Service Tax (DST) in “anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the United States.” The reversal came after Trump said on Friday that he was “terminating” trade discussions.
The tax, which was expected to take effect on Monday, was anticipated to have a significant impact on United States-based companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple.
“Canada’s new government is focused on building the strongest economy in the G7 and standing up for Canadian workers and businesses,” said Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne. “Rescinding the digital services tax will allow the negotiations of a new economic and security relationship with the United States to make vital progress and reinforce our work to create jobs and build prosperity for all Canadians.”..
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday that he and Trump had agreed to continue trade discussions with the hope of signing an agreement by July 21.
The resumption of talks follows Trump’s social media berating of Canada on Friday. ..
ICE lambastes CNN for hyping up new app aimed at targeting federal agents
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement slammed CNN for giving favorable coverage to a new app that allows users to upload media of immigration operations they see to warn others within a five-mile radius.
The app was created in the aftermath of the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles and comes at a time when violence against federal agents has dramatically increased.
The founder of the app says he does not want anyone to interfere with operations, claiming the app is intended to warn illegal immigrants to stay away from certain areas.
“When I saw what was happening in this country, I wanted to do something to fight back,” Joshua Aaron told CNN, comparing the deportation of illegal aliens to Nazi Germany. “We’re literally watching history repeat itself.”
In response to the report, ICE acting Director Todd Lyons said CNN was being “reckless” because advertising such an app will only make the current operational environment more dangerous for federal agents….
Prior to the app’s release, far-left groups in cities like Los Angeles had been relying on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X to spread the word of ICE or Border Patrol activities. Warning posts on social media on agents’ whereabouts have led to rioters physically confronting federal agents, leading to greater anger from locals within the region….

Senate Dems Deploy ‘Nuclear Option’ In Fruitless Effort To Tank Trump’s Bill
Senate Democrats went nuclear Monday morning in an effort to prevent Republicans from enacting a permanent extension of President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts in the president’s “big, beautiful” bill.
Senate Democrats moved to overrule the presiding chair’s ruling that Senate Republicans can use a contentious accounting tactic to score a permanent tax cut extension as deficit-neutral and thus not add to the price tag of the president’s sweeping tax and immigration bill.
GOP senators cast Democrats’ decision to appeal the presiding officer’s rulings as part of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s attempts to undermine Senate rules and weaken the 60-vote legislative filibuster, which Democrats have suggested they could eliminate the next time they take the majority.
Senate Republicans quashed Democrats’ effort in a party-line vote to overrule the presiding officer. Multiple GOP senators described Democrats’ effort to deploy the nuclear option — overriding the presiding officer’s ruling to change Senate rules — as a norms-busting move to derail passage of Trump’s landmark bill, in brief interviews with the Daily Caller News Foundation.
If Senate Republicans had been forced to use an alternative “current law” baseline, the conference would have had to rewrite the tax portion of the bill to not add to the deficit beyond 2034 as specified in so-called budget reconciliation rules.
Congressional Republicans are using the so-called budget reconciliation process to steer around their Democratic colleagues’ opposition by passing their tax and immigration-focused bill by a simple majority vote. A marathon session of voting, known as a “vote-a-rama” is currently underway in the upper chamber during which senators can offer a lengthy number of amendments to alter the substance of the bill before a vote on final passage.
Republican South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds told the DCNF that Democrats’ votes to overrule the presiding officer show they are “not very sincere” about their alleged commitment to Senate rules….

Mount Vernon, New York, Mayor Accused of Warning Alleged Child Molester Weeks Before Arrest
Mount Vernon, New York, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard faces a lawsuit accusing her of alerting a close associate, basketball coach Dwayne Murray, that he was about to be arrested on charges of molesting a minor.
The lawsuit, filed by community activist Gabriel Thompson, claims the mayor summoned Murray to City Hall in late April, nearly two weeks before his arrest, to warn him of the pending investigation.
According to the complaint, Patterson-Howard received a text message on April 28 from a supporter alerting her to allegations against a “middle-aged close associate” accused of inappropriate relations with a 14-year-old and theft from a nonprofit organization.
Murray, 62, who served as executive director of the Mount Vernon Junior Knights youth basketball program, was charged with sexual abuse of a minor on May 15 by Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace, the New York Post reports.
The charges relate to alleged molestation of a 12-year-old girl over a period exceeding one year…

“As far as her educating people how to evade ICE arrests, she’s really educating them on how to avoid prosecution,” he continued. “Because there are statutes on the books when you knowingly hinder your removal, that’s a crime.”

DOJ charges hundreds of people in $14.6 billion healthcare fraud takedown
The Justice Department on Monday announced charges for 324 people, including nearly 100 medical professionals, in what the DOJ called the largest healthcare fraud takedown in U.S. history.
The $14.6 billion crackdown spanned all 50 states and included charges ranging from opioid trafficking and telemedicine fraud to transnational identity theft schemes.
Of the total charged, 77 defendants were prosecuted by state attorneys general, while the remaining 247 face federal charges. Authorities said they seized over $245 million in cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and other assets.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the takedown “delivers justice to criminal actors who prey upon our most vulnerable citizens and steal from hardworking American taxpayers.”
The healthcare fraud bust under President Donald Trump and his appointees marks a major step above efforts by the Justice Department under the Biden administration, which uncovered $2.75 billion in false claims last year, resulting in 193 defendants charged.
The announcement came as Senate Republicans advanced the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping tax and spending package that proposes major changes to Medicaid reimbursements.
All GOP senators except Sens. Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Rand Paul (R-KY) voted to move the bill forward. Tillis, who announced Sunday he would not seek reelection, warned the legislation would make “devastating” changes to Medicaid…
