Abortion Rates Keep Rising After Dobbs

The latest #WeCount data, released Monday, show that the monthly number of abortions in the U.S. went from 83,930 in April 2022 to 102,040 in January 2024.

In total, there were 1.14 million abortions performed in the U.S. last year, according to the #WeCount report. Throughout 2024, the monthly abortion number mostly remained between 90,000 and 100,000, with only one month (January) seeing more abortions than that and only one month (September) seeing fewer.

The monthly average number of abortions in 2024 was 95,200, up from a monthly average of 88,000 in 2023 and a monthly average of 79,600 for April 2022 (when the #WeCount report started) through December 2022.

Comparing the #WeCount data to abortion data from years before 2022 is a bit difficult, since other estimates—like those from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—were calculated differently.

CDC data encompassing 46 states and the District of Columbia show 625,978 abortions performed in 2021 and 597,355 in 2020. The Guttmacher Institute also has measured abortion rates, finding 930,160 abortions in D.C. and all 50 states in 2020 and 916,460 abortions in 2019.

The CDC’s much lower numbers rely on reports from centralized state health bodies, notes the Pew Research Center, while the Guttmacher Institute attempted to tally data from all known abortion providers…

The 9th Circuit Says California’s One-Per-Month Limit on Gun Purchases Is Unconstitutional

9th Circuit Judge Danielle J. Forrest (9th Circuit)

A California law that limits gun purchases to one per month is unconstitutional on its face, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled last Friday. The three-judge panel’s unanimous conclusion illustrates the continuing impact of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which clarified the constitutional test for gun control laws.

“California’s law is facially unconstitutional because possession of multiple firearms and the ability to acquire firearms through purchase without meaningful constraints are protected by the Second Amendment,” Judge Danielle J. Forrest, a Donald Trump appointee, wrote in Nguyen v. Bonta, “and California’s law is not supported by our nation’s tradition of firearms regulation.” The opinion was joined by Judge Bridget S. Bade, who also was appointed by Trump, and by Judge John B. Owens, who was appointed by Barack Obama.

The law at issue in Nguyen, originally enacted in 1999, was aimed at preventing “straw purchases”—transactions in which people buy multiple firearms and transfer them to individuals who are not legally allowed to possess them. The restriction, which originally applied only to handguns but was eventually extended to all firearms, applies to all buyers with a few exceptions, including law enforcement agencies, private security companies, and movie studios.

The plaintiffs in this case, including individual gun owners, two firearm retailers, and three gun rights groups, argued that California’s restriction violated the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Last year, U.S. District Judge William Q. Hayes, a George W. Bush appointee, agreed that the law failed the Bruen test, and the 9th Circuit upheld that decision….

Abortion up to birth in the UK

MPs vote to decriminalise abortion at any point up to birth. Critics say amendment to current law could pave way for dangerous, as well as sex-selective, abortions.

Women will no longer be prosecuted for aborting their pregnancies at any point up to birth.

Majority of 242 to decriminalise seeking an abortion at any stage of gestation for any reason, women will no longer face an investigation or arrest for doing so.

AI job filters push white guys to the bottom of applicants

AI image.

Fresh research promoted by a new AI watchdog has revealed that resume audit filters used by mega-corporations to help identify the best candidates for top jobs have a secret bias that favors black people over white people and women over men.

Overall, the bias favors black people and women by 12%, but in some tests of the “cultural” words or references used in resumes between black women and white men, such as the colleges they attended, the bias can reach 50%.

“Given that these systems are already being deployed at scale in high-stakes decision-making scenarios, this represents an urgent problem requiring immediate attention,” said the scholarly study of AI resume audits used by major employers to pick candidates for attention and eventually a live job interview.

The surprise finding: Potential employers do not want any race or sex filters, and the AI companies are not doing enough to control for the bias.

“There’s up to a 12% difference in interview rates between white men and black women, despite, you know, all having identical resumes,” said Jason Hausenloy, an independent AI safety expert who is also associated with the newly established Washington watchdog Alliance for Secure AI.

He noted that in one test cited by the research paper, exact resumes were fed through a so-called “large language model” used by companies to whittle down applicants. The name on one was “Tamika Williams (she/her),” a black candidate. The white candidate was referred to as “Todd Baker (he/him).”

Hausenloy said that the AI filter favored “Tamika Williams” 25%-50% more….

In Michigan, a major company is promising to build a new factory, invest billions, and bring in more than two thousand jobs. It quite possibly could change the fortune of one of the state’s poorest areas.

But as badly as they may need jobs, many residents have risen up to fight the plans.

And now the small township— roughly six miles by six miles— is a major focal point in national battle over jobs and national security.

It’s often said that youth are architects of tomorrow’s world. They just might be the architects of the upcoming election. Our reporting from key battleground states continues this week in Pennsylvania with Lisa Fletcher.

An update to our reporting on the illegal immigration crisis in Europe. Poland recently announced a temporary ban on foreigners from claiming asylum after they cross the border illegally from neighboring Belarus.

Iran confirms missile attack on U.S. military base in Qatar

Iran launched multiple missiles against American military bases in the Middle East on Monday in retaliation for the U.S. strike on its nuclear facilities this weekend.

  • At least 10 missiles were launched toward Qatar and at least one missile launched toward Iraq, according to an Israeli official.

The latest: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released a statement claiming it had launched a “devastating and powerful missile attack” against Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

  • “This base is the headquarters of the Air Force and the largest strategic asset of the US terrorist army in the West Asia region,” the IRGC statement said.
  • Iran “will not leave any attack on its territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security unanswered under any circumstances,” the statement stressed.

The Foreign Ministry of Qatar, which frequently acts as an intermediary for diplomatic talks in the region, strongly condemned the Iranian attack and called for a return to the negotiating table.

Why it matters: The scope of the Iranian retaliation — particularly the number of casualties — will determine how President Trump responds, and whether the U.S. plunges deeper into Israel’s war with Iran.

  • Trump was scheduled to meet with his national security team at 1 p.m. ET at the White House to discuss the threat.
  • The president has warned that any retaliation “will be met with force far greater than what was witnessed” during the U.S. military attack against three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

Driving the news: “The White House and the Department of Defense are aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar,” a senior White House official told Axios.

  • Iranian media confirmed that an operation against U.S. military assets in the region was underway….

Illegal Alien Gang Member, Freed into U.S. by Biden Administration, Charged with Attempted Murder of ICE Agent

ICE

Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, an illegal alien and known member of Tren de Aragua, which has been designated as a terrorist organization, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault of a federal officer with infliction of bodily injury.

On June 18, ICE agents sought to take Hurtado-Cariaco into custody in Bellevue, Nebraska.

During the operation, Hurtado-Cariaco allegedly threw an ICE agent to the ground, bashed her head into the pavement, and ripped off her protective armor while repeatedly making violent contact with the agent.

As a result, the ICE agent sustained serious injuries to her head and arm and was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

Hurtado-Cariaco also allegedly assaulted an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

After the alleged attack Hurtado-Cariaco fled the scene but ICE agents located him an hour later and arrested him.

“This Venezuelan national is a criminal illegal alien and Tren de Aragua gang member who violently attacked an ICE and FBI agent and has been charged with attempted murder,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement…
