FBI Busts Multimillion Dollar Fraud Schemes Across the Country

Patel highlighted some of the results of Operation Riptide, which focuses on “criminal actors and the key services they rely on, their infrastructure, their tools and services, their communications platforms, and their money.

FBI Cleveland, for instance, disrupted a Chinese phishing platform “linked to the theft of millions of credit card numbers and nearly $1.9 billion dollars in losses worldwide,” Patel revealed.

As a result of the efforts of the FBI in Charlotte, two individuals were convicted for operating a business email compromise scheme that stole $25 million from U.S. companies.

“Thanks to FBI Boston, our Cyber Division, and international partners, we helped dismantle a VPN service used by ransomware groups around the world,” Patel said, later adding, “This is exactly what Operation Riptide is about: targeting the cybercriminal ecosystem at every level. And we’re just getting started.”

Fraudsters have also been targeted by the FBI. In Los Angeles, for instance, an Orange County man was arrested “for carrying out a nearly $100-million-dollar bank fraud scheme,” according to Patel.

“Thanks to FBI Milwaukee, a Wisconsin man pleaded guilty to defrauding nearly 190 investors out of more than $14 million dollars. Out of New Orleans, a Texas man was indicted for running a $4-million-dollar investment fraud scam that victimized more than 20 people,” he said, noting that a Texas couple has also been indicted “for stealing more than $2.5 million dollars from vulnerable victims through a years-long psychic fraud scheme” thanks to the FBI Seattle.

Patel added, “FBI Pittsburgh also announced charges against an Ohio woman accused of embezzling more than $460,000 dollars from a law firm while working as a paralegal.”…

Colombia: Pro-Trump Outsider Abelardo de la Espriella Wins Presidential Election

De la Espriella, a 47-year-old lawyer and businessman supportive of President Donald Trump and nicknamed “The Tiger,” will take office at the end of outgoing Marxist President Gustavo Petro’s four-year term on August 7.

Preliminary results published by Colombia’s National Civil Registry indicate that, with 99.99 percent of all votes counted as of Sunday night, de la Espriella obtained 49.66 percent of the votes cast while Cepeda obtained 48.70. 

Voter turnout was measured at 63.60 percent, with 26.45 million Colombians casting a vote on Sunday.

At press time, three voting tables out of 122,020 remain to be counted as of Monday morning — representing the last 0.01 percent of the votes according to the Colombian National Civil Registry.

“Nearly 13 million Colombians placed their trust in [Vice President-elect] José Manuel Restrepo, in the Tiger, and in this great dream called Homeland Miracle. This historic support fills us with gratitude, but also with an enormous responsibility,” de la Espriella wrote on a social media alongside a video thanking those who voted for him.

“Today begins a new stage for our country, a stage built on the free and democratic will of millions of citizens who decided to believe in a great, safe, prosperous Colombia full of opportunities,” he continued….

Housing affordability unlikely to return to more favorable levels of the past, economist says

The affordability of the U.S. housing market may not improve significantly over time for would-be homebuyers, with a new report suggesting that they shouldn’t wait in the hopes of affordability measures returning to their pre-2022 levels.

Sarah Wolfe, a senior economist and strategist at Morgan Stanley, said in a report that while housing affordability could improve modestly over time, it is “unlikely to return to more favorable levels of the past, as the market adjusts to a higher-cost, tighter-supply environment.”

Wolfe noted that there was a brief period of optimism in February when mortgage rates briefly dipped below 6%, but it was short-lived as they returned to around 6.5% and have remained over 6% since then – which sapped the potential momentum for the housing market before it could gather steam.

“That recent episode is telling. In today’s market, small changes in rates have outsized effects on affordability, which remains historically strained, due in part to this rate-sensitivity,” Wolfe wrote….

‘Groundbreaking’ Potential Lupus Cure Sends Patients into Remission, Allowing Dreams to Be Fulfilled

A genetic therapy that’s already revolutionized cancer treatment has now sent five patients of lupus into remission, allowing one to fulfill her dreams of skiing.

The uncurable autoimmune disorder lupus affects 1.5 million Americans, but a trial of CAR T-cell therapy for lupus recently concluded in the UK shows that the disease’s permanence may be at an end.

GNN has reported over a dozen times on the use of CAR T-cell therapy, a Nobel Prize-winning discovery that leverages human white blood cells for cancer targeting.

The white cells are withdrawn from the patient’s blood before receiving modified genetic coding that reprograms them to hunt malignancies.

That new programing spreads to the rest of the immune system, and the patient’s own body becomes capable of destroying their cancer.

Cancers are mostly protected from human immunity because of a sort of invisibility cloak that convinces the immune cells like T lymphocytes (the T in CAR T-cell) that they are perfectly normal cells.

In complete contrast but with a similar outcome lupus, like other autoimmune disorders, sees the immune system identifying normal healthy cells as malignant intruders and targeting them for destruction.

In the case of lupus it’s the kidneys, and sometimes other organs.

9 patients at University College London Hospital (UCLH) were treated for lupus nephritis, a life-threatening lupus-related condition that can result in debilitating fatigue, inflammation, joint pain, and organ failure.

5 went into a sort of lupus remission, including one named Katie Tinkler, who since recovering has fulfilled a dream of going Alpine skiing for the very first time, and was able to dance at her daughter’s wedding too.

Among the treatment group, 6 patients received a lower dose of CAR T-cell therapy, and 3 got a higher dose.

5 of those on the lower dose went into remission within just 3 months, and stayed there over the study’s 11 month follow-up period…..

Activist Wins 10-Year Battle to Ensure That Child Abuse Is Considered Above All Else in NY Custody Trials

New legislation that will compel New York judges to consider domestic violence or child abuse charges and risks—above all else—in child custody decisions, could soon become law.

Resulting from a decade of work from a dedicated mother, bills known as “Kyra’s Law” passed both the senate and house and is on Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk for signing.

The bill’s author is Jacqueline Franchetti, a resident of Long Island who had to rewrite the language several times to ensure that hearsay and unfalsifiable negatives—in other words, allegations of low-merit—would not influence decisions.

The result of her tireless campaigning was some 300,000 emailing their reps or participating in marches to bring Kyra’s Law to the Chamber floor for a vote, a moment that Franchetti admitted was “very emotional.”

“Kyra’s Law is going to move us lightyears forward in addressing the child custody crisis and protecting children from abusive parents,” she told CBS News.

The law is named after Franchetti’s daughter, Kyra, who was killed by her father in a murder suicide at the man’s home years ago.

During a lengthy child custody battle, the judge had determined Franchetti’s ex to be of “low risk” even though she had furnished proof of activities like stalking and making threats, the merits of which the police testified to….
