A 51-year-old man in California is accused of killing his estranged wife, allegedly shooting her just outside a local Denny’s after the two had eaten inside the restaurant before he fled the scene in a white Toyota RAV4.
Deputies took David Moreno into custody over the weekend for his alleged role in the slaying of 38-year-old Brittney Harris, authorities announced.
According to a news release from the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area of Avenue 18½ and Golden State Boulevard at about 11:30 a.m. regarding multiple reports of a woman being shot.
Upon arriving, first responders found a woman, later identified as Harris, inside a car in the Denny’s parking lot. She was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Deputies began lifesaving measures before emergency medical personnel took over and transported her to a local hospital for treatment, where she was pronounced dead.
“[Investigators] did determine that this was a domestic violence-related situation in which the couple were eating in a local restaurant nearby here,” the release states.
“They exited the restaurant, and then the man shot the woman multiple times before he fled the area.” ….

A North Carolina man allegedly shot his girlfriend and stole her car before he opened fire on women at a Hardee’s and a grocery store while trying — unsuccessfully — to steal their cars.
Robert Page, 52, faces a slew of charges including three counts each of first-degree attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill along with one count of robbery and larceny of a motor vehicle.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the alleged crime spree began around 7 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 700 block of Messenger Street in Fayetteville.
Cops found a woman, later identified as Page’s girlfriend, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Page allegedly stole his girlfriend’s car and drove to a Hardee’s in the 6300 block of Ramsey Street. Cops with Fayetteville police say he tried to steal a woman’s car before shooting her.
Minutes later, he allegedly did the same thing in the parking lot of a Food Lion grocery store. Both victims were listed in stable condition at local hospitals. Cops quickly took Page into custody.
Leighanna Bullard, in an interview with local NBC affiliate WRAL, identified the victim at the Food Lion as her 24-year-old sister Izzy Dolin. Bullard said her sister was grabbing a cup of coffee at the grocery store before work.
“He said, ‘I need this car,’ and she kind of laughed it off at him at first. He did push her, and then he shot her in the face,” Bullard told the TV station. …

President Donald Trump has long accused New York Attorney General Letitia James of using the power of her office to target him and his allies. A stunning new allegation from one of her own prosecutors may have just proved him right.
According to the Times Union:
A prosecutor in the New York attorney general’s office sent an agency-wide email to hundreds of colleagues Friday claiming that he had been instructed by his supervisor “to find and pursue crimes committed by specific individuals and organizations affiliated with Donald Trump,” according to a copy of the email obtained by the Times Union.
The prosecutor, who was assigned to the Investor Protection Bureau, alleged in his email that his bureau chief, Shamiso Maswoswe, had directed him to target “Trump himself, Truth Social, Hewlett Packard (DOJ approved merger) … without having a credible reason for targeting this organizations and individuals.”
The email sent early Friday by Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld, who officials said has worked for the attorney general’s office for about two years, was quickly deleted from the office’s servers and vanished from the inboxes of more than 2,000 employees. A follow-up agency-wide email subsequently sent by Attorney General Letitia James’ general counsel, Kumiki Gibson, informed employees that it was an “internal” matter and that no one in the office was “in danger,” according to three people familiar with the communication.
Responding to the Times Union’s request for comment, James’ spokeswoman Alexis Richards said in a statement:
This is a personnel matter, and the employee in question has been placed on administrative leave with full pay. The office of the attorney general is committed to upholding New York’s laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers, regardless of political beliefs. We strongly reject any assertion to the contrary.
The outlet reported that after his first email was deleted, Wiesenfeld sent a second one which began, “The best part of having f*** you money is being able to tell the truth, without fear of consequences so here we go.”
He wrote:
If you believe Trump is using (Department of Justice) attorneys to prosecute his enemies and further his political interests, you should find it equally troubling that Tish [James] is doing exactly the same thing. I ask that you not serve as Tish’s personal attorneys by targeting her political enemies. Instead, I hope you choose to prosecute crimes and find the individuals accountable, rather than targeting individuals and then finding crimes.
Additionally, Wiesenfeld alleged that while James had used “significant public taxpayer dollars to target convenient public enemies,” she has done nothing about “rampant nonprofit homeless shelter fraud and antisemitic crimes in and around synagogues.” …

DHS to Push Voter Fraud Probes in 9 States Before Midterms
The Department of Homeland Security is preparing to launch a new surge of voter-fraud investigations in nine states beginning Tuesday, according to internal federal guidance reviewed by CNN, as the Trump administration intensifies its election-integrity efforts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The initiative will be carried out by Homeland Security Investigations, the arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement that typically handles drug smuggling, human trafficking, and child exploitation.
HSI offices in Washington state, Wisconsin, Missouri, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Nevada, New York, and Connecticut are expected to take investigative action from early September through mid-October, according to the guidance reviewed by CNN.
The guidance describes the effort as a “coordinated criminal voter fraud surge initiative” designed to pursue investigative leads, conduct field interviews, and support timely prosecutorial review, CNN reported Monday.
The move expands an effort by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to make DHS a central force in President Donald Trump’s push to identify and prosecute suspected election fraud.
DHS has also sought access to state voter rolls for federal audits and has pressed states to cooperate with broader election-related reforms.
The administration argues that stronger verification of voter eligibility is needed to protect election integrity and ensure that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections.
The new investigative push comes as the November elections approach, making its timing particularly significant.
CNN reported that Justice Department policy has historically discouraged overt investigative actions close to an election when they could affect voting, political campaigns, or the handling of election disputes.

Video: 110 trucking schools shut down over English requirement violations
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced the shutdown of 110 truck driving schools Monday, saying they violated the Trump administration’s new English proficiency standards.
At a news conference in Detroit, Duffy also warned over 160 more schools could be closed, claiming they lacked the space to properly train applicants and employed unlicensed drivers to perform driving tests.
He said the DOT has launched a nationwide audit of third-party testers in the industry.
It’s the latest move by a task force, led by Duffy and overseen by Vice President JD Vance, aimed at cracking down on alleged fraud in the trucking industry.
In May, Duffy announced that more than 20,000 truckers had been removed from U.S. roads since June 2025 as part of the department’s enforcement standards, including English proficiency.
Duffy labeled the closed schools the greatest offenders under the administration’s English proficiency rule, saying a DOT data analysis linked them to more than 5,000 instances of drivers failing English proficiency tests.
Duffy called the unqualified drivers dangerous, blaming them for a number of deadly crashes.
“Every single illegal driver on American roads — we’re gonna come for you,” he said at the news conference. “So maybe it’s just better off — cut up your commercial driver’s license and find something else to do. This is not your space. We are not going to allow you to endanger American citizens’ lives.”

A House Intelligence Committee report warns artificial intelligence could become the same kind of blind spot that led to the September 11 attacks.
The report cites testimony from Benjamin Buchanan, a Johns Hopkins professor and former White House Special Advisor for Artificial Intelligence on the National Security Council, who compared AI to the 9/11 Commission’s original finding that the attacks stemmed from a “failure of imagination.”
Buchanan told the committee AI is moving faster than the government can adapt, and much of the most relevant data now sits with private companies instead of Washington.
The committee points to China as proof the threat is already here.
FBI Director Kash Patel says Chinese hacking campaigns known as Salt Typhoon and Volt Typhoon have already penetrated U.S. water, energy and electrical grid systems, as well as telecommunications infrastructure.
Patel calls for a “whole-of-government approach” to lock down the country’s critical systems.
China ranks as the report’s top counterintelligence threat.
The FBI opens a new counterintelligence case ties to China about every 10 to 12 hours, according to testimony cited in the report, leaving the bureau “thousands of cases in arrears” with no hope of catching up.
The report also credits post 9/11 reforms like the creation of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Counterterrorism Center with real progress over the last 25 years.
Still, the committee found some of the same information-sharing gaps blamed for the 2001 attacks persist today, especially between federal agencies and state and local partners.
The report calls that persistence cause for “major alarms.”

California’s biggest utilities in crisis mode as shares fall off a cliff and insurers smell blood
California’s biggest utility companies were rocked Monday after lawmakers dealt Gov. Gavin Newsom a blow over a sweeping wildfire liability overhaul.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E Corp.) and Edison International shares plunged nearly 20% and 24%, respectively, Monday morning after California Democrats gutted Newsom’s proposal, which sought to change who pays when utility equipment sparks catastrophic wildfires.
The plan would have blocked insurance companies from suing utilities to recover some of their wildfire losses — a move insurers fiercely opposed.
Shares of Edison International, which owns Southern California Edison, were down around 23% to $54.22 Monday, marking the company’s largest single-day decline in more than 25 years, according to 24/7 Wall St.
Lawmakers instead backed a much narrower compromise after opposition from insurance companies, hedge funds and trial lawyers.
The final measure includes provisions aimed at stopping utility CEOs from receiving bonuses after their companies ignite wildfires and getting money to fire survivors faster.
PG&E has faced liability over several major California wildfires in recent years, including the 2018 Camp Fire, 2019 Kincade Fire, 2020 Zogg Fire and 2021 Dixie Fire.

More Than Half of Immigrant-Led Households Receive Some Type of Welfare Benefit
According to a chart published by Personal Finance Wizards, 45.6% of Afghan immigrant households in the United States receive SNAP benefits.
The chart, which shows the percentage of U.S. households receiving SNAP benefits by ethnicity, uses data from U.S. Census Table S0201.
Other groups with high participation rates include Somali households at 42.4%, Iraqi households at 34.8%, Dominican households at 34.4%, and Caribbean households at 28.2%.
Democrats are fond of claiming that illegal immigrants are not eligible for welfare and that illegal immigration, and immigration in general, represents a net gain for U.S. taxpayers.
The term “welfare” is used specifically to narrow the scope.
The reality, however, is that legal and illegal immigrants receive hundreds of billions of dollars in federal and state assistance each year through a variety of programs, including Medicaid, food assistance programs, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), housing assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), SNAP, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), school meal programs, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicare, and Affordable Care Act premium tax credits.
Furthermore, when it comes specifically to welfare, Democrats ignore the fact that families headed by illegal immigrant parents can receive benefits if they have U.S.-citizen children.
Because the parents often work off the books, they can claim to have no income, making their children eligible for welfare benefits.
A separate analysis of 2024 Survey of Income and Program Participation data, published in February 2026 by the Center for Immigration Studies, found that 52.7% of immigrant-headed households used one or more major welfare programs, compared with 37.3% of U.S.-born-headed households.
The largest gaps were in Medicaid use, at 39% versus 27%, and food assistance, at 35% versus 22%.
Among households headed specifically by illegal immigrants, the report found an overall welfare participation rate of 60.7%.
One data point often cited to support the false claim that immigrants use benefits at a lower rate than native-born citizens is that SSI and housing assistance use among this group is lower than among U.S.-born households.
However, the lower rate of SSI use is only because illegal aliens are largely barred from receiving SSI, although some still receive it through various means.
As for housing benefits, U.S.-citizen children of immigrants, including illegal immigrants, qualify for housing assistance, so their parents do not need to apply for it themselves.
A follow-up Center for Immigration Studies report published in June 2026, using pooled 2021-2025 Current Population Survey data, narrowed the focus to non-citizen-headed households, roughly half of them illegal aliens.
It found 47% of non-citizen households used one or more traditional welfare programs (TANF, SSI, SNAP, WIC, school meals, Medicaid, or housing assistance), compared with 28% for U.S.-born households, rising to 57% versus 34% once eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit was included.
State-level gaps were widest in Maryland, Arizona, New York, and North Carolina, and non-citizen households in every one of the highest-immigration states, including New York, California, Texas, and Florida, used traditional welfare or qualified for the tax credits at rates 20 or more percentage points above U.S.-born households in the same state. …

South Carolina woman accused of stabbing Lyft driver 11 times claims mental health crisis
A South Carolina woman accused of stabbing her Lyft driver 11 times before taking his vehicle was denied bond Friday as her attorney argued she was experiencing a severe mental health crisis during the alleged attack.
Naziyha Weatherall faces charges of attempted murder, carjacking and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in Greenville County.
The charges stem from an April 22 incident, court records show.
FOX Carolina reported that prosecutors called the allegations a “frightening factual scenario” during Friday’s bond hearing and argued Weatherall posed an extreme danger to the community.
“The victim was simply just trying to do his job and was stabbed 11 times,” a solicitor said, according to FOX Carolina. “Not only was he stabbed 11 times, his car was then carjacked by this defendant.”
The driver’s wife appeared in court on his behalf, saying the trauma of the alleged attack prevented him from attending.
“What concerns us most is that happened while my husband was simply working,” she said. “He was not looking for any confrontation, he was providing a service to a person. If this level of violence could happen to someone who was simply doing his job, we are concerned about potential risks to other people in our community.” …

However, security researchers at Socket now say the extension was later acquired by a threat actor and updated with malicious functionality.
It had around 70,000 users when that malicious functionality appeared, although researchers caution that this does not mean every user received the malicious version.
The extension was delisted from the Chrome Web Store on Aug. 14 after being flagged as potentially malicious. ..
Nashville school pulls LGBT books after Christian teacher was disciplined for refusing to read one
A Nashville charter school has removed books featuring LGBT themes from its elementary school libraries, months after a Christian teacher was disciplined for refusing to read one of the books to students, a decision the school later cleared from the teacher’s record.
The Tennessee Star reported Friday that, according to the First Liberty Institute — a nonprofit legal organization — the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) program in Nashville has taken out books that promote same-sex marriage.
“We are thrilled that KIPP Nashville voluntarily removed books that could run afoul of parents’ rights under the Constitution and Tennessee law,” Cliff Martin, senior counsel at First Liberty Institute, said in a Thursday statement.
The development comes months after First Liberty said it reached an agreement with KIPP Nashville to clear the record of Eric Rivera, who taught at Antioch College Prep Elementary School and was issued a “final warning letter” after declining to read a children’s book about same-sex parents to his first-grade class.
KIPP Nashville operates 10 high performing schools in Nashville, TN for Kindergarten-12th grade, including KIPP Antioch College Prep Elementary School.
In February, Rivera was denied religious accommodation for not reading a book that violated his sincerely held religious beliefs. …
Fuel supplier sues distributor for nearly $4M over gas allegedly sold at Trump-promoted Freedom Fuel stations
Mansfield Oil Company filed the lawsuit against KRSM Inc. and its president, Syed Kazmi, on Aug. 19 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Mansfield alleges KRSM obtained approximately 150 loads of fuel from its account at the Twin Oaks terminal in Pennsylvania between May 21 and July 7, totaling roughly 1,124,594 gallons worth $3,998,868.46.
“KRSM sold a portion of such fuel to its stations that are part of the Freedom Fuel Network,” Mansfield alleges in the complaint.
The company further claims KRSM was able to sell some of the fuel at low prices because it had not paid Mansfield for it. Those allegations have not been adjudicated.
KRSM had been a Mansfield customer since 2022. A commercial credit application included with the complaint and signed by Kazmi states that if Mansfield extended credit and KRSM purchased fuel, KRSM would be responsible for paying for it.
The agreement called for payment by electronic funds transfer within 10 days of receiving an invoice.
Mansfield acknowledged in the complaint that a data-receiving error delayed its ability to send the invoices until early July.
The company said it later discussed what it characterized as minor pricing discrepancies with Kazmi, revised the invoices and sent them to KRSM on July 17.
Mansfield alleges its bank subsequently advised it that KRSM had refused attempted drafts from its account.
KRSM disputes Mansfield’s account of the payment dispute.
Kazmi said in an Aug. 25 court declaration that he “did not agree that the amounts Mansfield demanded were correct or owing.”
In court filings, KRSM contends the dispute centers on the prices Mansfield charged for the fuel and says it objected to the invoices before the lawsuit was filed.
Freedom Fuel says on its website that it is a privately owned company that “answered President Trump’s call to action to lower prices at the pump.”
“We didn’t hesitate; we took decisive action and lowered our prices to make filling up more affordable for hardworking families across the greater Philadelphia area,” the company says on its website. …

California bill recognizing 2 Islamic holidays nears Newsom’s desk
California could soon formally recognize two of Islam’s most important holy days under legislation that would give state workers greater flexibility to take them off and allow public schools to close in observance of the holidays.
The measure, which overwhelmingly passed the state Assembly and is awaiting Senate action, would recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in state law and could soon head to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk.
Assembly Bill 2017, introduced by Democratic San Francisco Assemblymember Matt Haney, passed the Assembly 64-1 in late May.
It must clear the Senate before the legislative session ends Monday to reach Newsom.
The bill would let state employees use existing paid holiday credits to take time off for Eid.
Public schools and community colleges could also close for the holidays.
“California is home to one of the largest and most vibrant Muslim communities in the country, and their traditions deserve recognition and respect,” Haney said in a news release about the bill in March. “No student should have to choose between celebrating one of the holiest days of their faith and showing up to school, and no worker should feel they have to sacrifice their religious observance.”
Haney also said the bill is also about treating Muslim Californians equally.
“AB 2017 is about making sure Muslim Californians are seen, valued, and treated with the same dignity as every other community in our state,” he said.
Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Eid al-Adha, or the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God.
Supporters say the bill would make it easier for Muslim workers and students to take part in Eid prayers and spend the holidays with their families.
The California Family Council, a conservative Christian advocacy group, opposes the bill’s school provisions, while saying it supports allowing students to take time off for religious holidays.
The group objects to language allowing schools to hold exercises “acknowledging and celebrating the meaning and importance” of Eid.
It also criticized a provision allowing the State Board of Education to develop a model curriculum guide for those exercises.
“No California statute authorizes public schools to hold exercises celebrating the meaning of Christmas, Easter, or Good Friday,” the group said in a May statement, arguing Christian and Jewish holidays have not received comparable treatment. “The asymmetry is written into the law.” ….

Grand Canyon braces for more storms after deadly flash flood, about 15 people still missing
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — More rain and thunderstorms were possible Monday at the Grand Canyon following a major flash flood that left one person dead and about 15 others missing or unaccounted for, with scores of visitors evacuated and the only water pipeline for tourists and residents destroyed.
Emergency water restrictions that began Monday prevented tourists from staying overnight at lodges and hotels within the park.
Year-round residents were asked to conserve water.
A flood watch was in effect.
Visiting the Grand Canyon — a crown jewel of the national park system — can be particularly dangerous in the summer because of the risk of flash flooding that accompanies the monsoon, or rainy season.
Clear days can give way quickly to thunderstorms and downpours.
“With deep monsoonal moisture in place and already saturated soils in some locations, an elevated risk of flash flooding will be in place through Monday,” the National Weather Service said early Monday. …

Ebola Outbreak: Congo Officials Report 6,000 Cases and 2,911 Deaths
The outbreak is considered the fastest-growing in history and officials said there are currently 6,000 cases and 2,911 people have died while over 1,360 patients have recovered, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
“The World Health Organization has said that it remains out of control and is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, the deadliest on record, which killed more than 11,000 people, primarily in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone,” the outlet continued.
The U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) said Friday that officials were responding to the situation in the Congo and so far no cases have been confirmed in the United States due to the outbreak.
“The outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola virus,” the CDC noted.
Responding to the outbreak, the agency said, has been difficult due to limited health infrastructure, conflict in the area that has created security problems, violence against health care workers, shortages of personal protective equipment, population movement, cross-border travel, a lack of trust in government officials, and misinformation. …

New federal grand jury subpoena issued to former James Comey advisor in leak investigation: sources
A federal grand jury issued a subpoena to former FBI Director James Comey’s longtime friend and advisor on Monday as part of a new investigation into Comey allegedly leaking classified information to the media, multiple law enforcement sources told Fox News Digital.
The subpoena targets former Comey adviser Daniel Richman and indicates that the Justice Department has launched a fresh investigation into the leak of classified information to the New York Times.
The issue was also investigated under President Donald Trump’s first term, but was cut off when former President Joe Biden entered office.
The new investigation is in addition to the one centered on Comey’s alleged threats against Trump.
Richman, a law professor and former attorney for Comey, played a central role in the initial investigation into the leak in 2018.
He also later filed a lawsuit arguing that prosecutors violated his Fourth Amendment rights by seizing material from his electronic devices during investigations in 2019 and 2020.
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled in his favor in that case in December of last year.
Prosecutors had relied on the files to indict Comey on charges of making false statements and obstructing Congress in connection with his 2020 testimony on FBI officials anonymously giving information to news outlets.
The indictment accused Richman, previously a special FBI employee, of communicating with reporters about investigations into 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in that year’s election loss to President Donald Trump.
The new case comes as Comey is also facing litigation over his “86 47” Instagram post, which prosecutors argue constituted a threat against Trump.
Comey is facing two federal charges and up to 10 years in prison in that case, though the original prosecutor in the case resigned in early June….
OMG! Obama Judge Rules Possession of AI-Generated Child Pornography Is Legal
A federal appeals court has ruled that the private possession of AI-generated child pornography is protected by the First Amendment, so long as no real child was involved in creating the images.
The Seventh Circuit upheld the dismissal of a possession charge against Wisconsin resident Steven Anderegg.
According to investigators, Anderegg had hundreds of AI-generated sexually explicit images depicting children on his personal devices.
Anderegg still faces three other charges related to allegedly producing and distributing the material and transferring it to a minor under 16.
The Justice Department appealed the dismissal, arguing that the government should be permitted to prohibit possession of all obscene virtual child sexual abuse material.
However, the appeals court said it was bound by the Supreme Court’s 2002 decision in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition.
That ruling struck down restrictions covering sexually explicit depictions of fictional children when no actual minors were exploited in their production.
Two judges nevertheless expressed serious concerns about applying the nearly 25-year-old precedent to modern artificial intelligence.
“Indeed, in Free Speech Coalition, the Supreme Court addressed the scope of First Amendment protections for virtual CSAM [child sexual abuse material], but that was nearly twenty five years ago, and the image generation technology available today was likely unimaginable back then,” Judge John Lee wrote…..
“Given the relentless advancement in artificial intelligence models, we have some concerns about the lines these cases draw, but we are not free to redraw them ourselves.”
The result is a disturbing legal distinction.
Possession of child sexual abuse material involving real children can be criminalized because actual victims were exploited.
But entirely artificial depictions will receive constitutional protection when privately possessed at home.
Judges Lee and Joshua Kolar also cited research findings of child sexual abuse images in a major dataset used to train image-generating AI.
That raises the possibility that supposedly artificial material could still be connected to the exploitation of real children.
Unfortunately, the judges said the issue was not sufficiently developed in Anderegg’s case to decide it. …
