Third Mistrial: Lane County Prosecutors Caught Hiding Evidence Again

Judge's gavel with confidential legal documents and evidence folder on courtroom desk, AI image.
A judge’s gavel rests next to confidential case documents and evidence files on a courtroom desk.

A Lane County judge declared a mistrial in a shooting case after prosecutors sat on evidence for 18 months and dumped dozens of files on the defense after trial was already underway โ€” the third time this year the county’s district attorney’s office has been caught violating discovery rules in a violent crime case.

When the state cheats to win, the only person who pays is the defendant, and the system that’s supposed to protect the accused instead pads its conviction numbers by ambush.

Desmond Boris Washington, 40, was indicted in January 2025 on charges including attempted murder and assault with a firearm for a December 2024 shooting at City Nights, a downtown Eugene bar. His attorney, Willow Hillman, argued Washington acted in self-defense when he shot Elijah Collins Motley and Martez Mikel Lewis.

He never got a fair chance to make that case.

According to court documents, Hillman and her team received at least 33 pieces of discovery from prosecutor Matthew Wojcik one week before trial and 23 more pieces after the trial was scheduled to begin โ€” all of it allegedly in the prosecution’s possession for a year and a half.

Hillman says evidence is still missing, including text messages between a detective and witnesses, additional body camera footage, and a scientific evidence report. While she was drafting a motion to dismiss, she received photos from forensic testing and 225 pages of another report.

“The sheer volume of discovery that has come in since this trial commenced creates prejudice,” Hillman wrote. Washington had already been waiting 18 months for his trial, which had been postponed twice. “He is being denied due process and a fair trial simply by the state providing a volume of discovery that cannot properly be analyzed in this short amount of time.”

Lane County Circuit Court Judge Jay McAlpin denied the motion to dismiss but acknowledged the problem. “The sheer volume of material disclosed late makes it impossible to identify every item discovered in the last two weeks, much less evaluate them,” McAlpin wrote.

He noted that numerous continuances, mistrials, and dismissed cases in the last five years can be attributed to prosecution error, and that it is incumbent on the state to find and disclose everything it might use in court โ€” a shared obligation between the DA’s office and Eugene Police.

This is the third mistrial in Lane County this year from a discovery violation, and the second in two weeks in a violent crime case before McAlpin with Hillman representing the defense.

The Register-Guard reported the pattern; the other three outlets in the daily cycle ignored it entirely, focusing instead on a Massachusetts judge restricting broadcast of autopsy photos and a 911 call in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

That case involves its own questions about what the public is allowed to see, but the contrast is telling: when a father asks a court to shield graphic images of his dead children from television cameras, the judiciary obliges; when prosecutors withhold evidence from a man fighting for his freedom, the judiciary calls it unintentional and schedules another trial.

McAlpin’s order requires a new trial to be rescheduled within two weeks. No indication yet whether anyone in the DA’s office will face disciplinary action for the violation.

The question isn’t whether the system is broken โ€” it’s whether anyone with the power to fix it cares enough to try.

โ€˜Societal Transformationโ€™: House Panel Grills Smithsonian Leader Over Bias Claims

Rep. Nancy Mace & Smithsonian American History Museum director Anthea Hartig (Pic via X)

The Smithsonian Institution, the worldโ€™s largest museum complex, is seeking societal transformation in the United States and promoting a narrative of โ€œAmerican wickedness,โ€ Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation, told a House panel Tuesday.

โ€œTeaching lessons about American wickedness is now the mission of the Smithsonian,โ€ Gonzalez said during a hearing of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency. โ€œIt is the intent of the leadership, and it is precisely what they train the staff to do.โ€ The hearing was titled, โ€œRewriting American History: Examining the Smithsonianโ€™s Efforts to Reshape the Past.โ€

Gonzalez noted that Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III and National Museum of American History Director Anthea Hartig have pushed these narratives on โ€œAmerican wickednessโ€ and societal transformation.

Specifically, he said that the institutionโ€™s leadership sought to promote the โ€œ1619 Project,โ€ a controversial history of America panned by both conservative and liberal historians. Simultaneously, it promoted the Black Lives Matter movement.

โ€œYou need to clean house and relieve all Smithsonian leadership of their duties,โ€ Gonzalez said.

Hartig, in her remarks at Tuesdayโ€™s hearing, strongly defended the museum as patriotic, adding that it is committed to nonpartisanship and telling the full history of the United States.

โ€œI have watched 10-year-olds with their families stand in front of the Star-Spangled Banner with their hands over their hearts. No one told them to,โ€ Hartig told the panel. โ€œThat is the National Museum of American History at its most powerful, patriotism, not instructed but inspired.โ€

Hartig noted, โ€œThe museum does not take sides in Americaโ€™s political debates.โ€

During the hearing, Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., accused Gonzalez of an โ€œongoing vendettaโ€ against the Smithsonian. He asked him who should decide what exhibits should be featured at a museum.

Gonzalez said a museumโ€™s leadership should decide that question, but noted, โ€œTaxpayers spend $1.1 billion on the museum, so the museum is accountable to the taxpayer.โ€

He said that societal transformation is โ€œnot why Americans entrusted these institutions to them.โ€

The hearing was prompted in part by a recent White House Domestic Policy Council report, โ€œSaving Americaโ€™s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institutionโ€™s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage.โ€…

The IRS accidentally sent this Tennessee farmer $20,000. He tried to return it, but they are threatening to take his farm unless he pays interest.

Wilson Kerby was mistakenly refunded an extra $20,000 in 2022.

As soon as he realized what had happened, he hired an accountant and made efforts to get the money back to the IRS.

FOUR YEARS later, the IRS wants the money back PLUS interest and making Kirby’s life a living nightmare.

When you need the help, you can’t talk to nobody. You’ve gotta talk to a dang computer!

I feel this, Farmer Kirby. I feel it deeply.

The man is just trying to do the right thing while not getting screwed over by the government, a difficult task in 2026.

Here’s News Channel 5:

‘She [the accountant] didn’t make a mistake, I didn’t make a mistake, they [the IRS] made a mistake,’ Kirby said.

Instead of resolving the issue, Kirby says the IRS charged him interest on the money he had tried to return and ultimately kept his entire 2025 tax refund.

‘Oh, I cried. It hurt me,’ Kirby said.

The IRS has not publicly addressed the specifics of Kirby’s case, citing federal privacy law.

Kirby says he reached out to anyone who might be able to help.

The man has asked the governor, senators, representatives, and asked his friends to appeal to heaven and pray for him.

Yet the IRS persists in their threats of seizing his family farm over a few grand.

Kirby met with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service in downtown Nashville in mid-July, though he says the visit did not move his case forward.

The service is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers navigate disputes โ€” and for many, it can be a valuable first step.

Kirby says his wish is straightforward.

‘I wish they would get it straightened out. And get one person to work on it, instead of sending these letters from all over the United States,’ Kirby said

Facebook Verified: Meta Now Wants a Video Selfie of Your Face

Metaโ€™s Facebook Verified badge requires a video selfie, part of a fast growing push to collect biometric data.

Meta is rolling out a badge on Facebook that requires users to record a video of their own face.

The feature, massively accelerating the normalization of face scanning and biometric data collection, is called Facebook Verified, and asks a user to record a short video selfie, which the company checks against the photos already on their profile to confirm a match.

The process is free and takes a few minutes.

The company, which has been aggressively lobbying for โ€œage verificationโ€ digital ID laws, presents the badge as a way to confirm a real person is behind an account.

โ€œAs AI makes it easier to generate content, profiles, and messages,โ€ it said, it wants users โ€œto know there is a real person on the other side of a profile.โ€

The badge is open to Facebook users who are 18 or older and in good standing with Metaโ€™s Community Standards on fraud, scams, and deceptive practices, and who show โ€œno evidence of inauthentic behavior.โ€

It is not available for Pages or ProMode accounts, which limits it to personal profiles.

Once a user completes the one-time check, the badge appears on Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and Profile. Meta said it plans to extend it to Feed posts over time.

Facebook Verified is separate from Meta Verified, the companyโ€™s paid subscription, which bundles a badge with impersonation protection and account support. Facebook Verified charges no fee.

Meta has not said how long it keeps the selfie video, where it stores it, or when it deletes it.

The launch materials describe the match and say nothing about the video afterward.

The scan arrives the same month Google added a selfie-video sign-in that records a userโ€™s face to recover a locked account. Age-check laws in several US states and in Britain already require a face or an ID scan to open some accounts…..

Houston midwife arrested for illegal abortion ring allowed to re-open facilities

Maria Rojas, a Houston-area midwife accused of orchestrating an illegal abortion ring, allowing her facilities to re-open while the case against her continues.

Maria Rojas was arrested in March of 2025 after two women said she committed abortions on them in the state of Texas.

A grand jury indicted her on three counts of committing an abortion, and 12 counts of practicing medicine without a license.

One woman, identified as E.G., said Rojas gave her abortion pills; another woman, N.M., said she committed an abortion on her, with the indictment in N.M.’s case specifying that the preborn child died.

She was accused of owning, operating, and committing abortions at multiple facilities, under the names Clinica Waller Latinoamericana in Waller, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge in Cypress, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic in Spring.

Rojas was allegedly charging between $800 and $1,300 for chemical abortions, and one patient said she had claimed to be a gynecologist, not a midwife.

Eight people were later arrested as well, all charged with practicing medicine without a license. One, Jose Manuel Cendan Ley, was specifically charged with assisting in an illegal abortion.

After Rojas was arrested, Texas obtained a restraining order to shut down her three businesses. In February, her attorneys asked for them to be reopened as the case proceeds.

The Fifteenth Court of Appeals ruled in Rojas’ favor, lifting the injunction against her businesses. This allows them to reopen as the case against her continues….

Rojas has not been acquitted of any charges, and the case will return to the Waller County district court.

She also faces a civil lawsuit, in addition to the criminal charges against her, and was represented by Jenna Hudson of the Center for Reproductive Rights.

While abortion activists are celebrating this ruling as a victory and framing it as an exoneration of Rojas, the case against her has not been resolved.

Mom safely gives birth to rare identical quadruplets in ‘very, very high risk’ pregnancy

Photo: Screenshot 9 News Australia video ''One of the worldโ€™s rarest birthsโ€™: Australian family's quadruplet joy'

An Australian woman is making headlines after naturally conceiving identical quadruplets, which doctors have called “one of the rarest births in the world.”

Jenitar Naโ€™amoana and her husband Jortham of Brisbane, Australia, said they were taken by “immense surprise” when they learned they were expecting four babies.

The couple already had four young children at home, and had reportedly not been planning to have more.

Despite the fact that the pregnancy was considered “very high risk,” Jenitar was able to carry the babies โ€” Emily, Harriet, Alexa, and Catherine โ€” with little complication.

The girls were born via c-section at 28 weeks and four days at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH).

“I was amazed that the conception happened and then we were convinced that there would be some complication in the pregnancy but the fact that they got to 28 weeks well, and well grown, is incredible,” Dr. Alexis Bendall said.

“Our precious miracles have arrived safely, and while our hearts are overflowing with gratitude, the reality of caring for four newborns at once has brought challenges we never could have imagined,” Jenitar wrote in a GoFundMe, noting the need to purchase a larger van to fit their whole family.

According to 9 News, the babies are still in the hospital for now, but their prognosis is good, and they are expected to join their parents and siblings at home soon….

Livery cabbie shot in face by bystander after NYC fender-bender: cops, sources

A livery cabbie was shot in the face by a bystander who opened fire soon after the motorist collided with a van driver in Brooklyn Friday, cops and sources said.

The 50-year-old TLC driver had just picked up a fare from NYCHAโ€™s Whitman Houses on North Portland Avenue near Auburn Place in Fort Greene shortly after 4 a.m. when he got into a fender-bender with a white Sprinter van, police said.

Both motorists began arguing when a pedestrian โ€“ who was not connected to either driver โ€“ suddenly approached and shot the cabbie in the right cheek, authorities said.

The violence came weeks after a gun-toting passenger shot a rideshare driver in the face during a robbery in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens around the same time July 11, police said.

That cabbie, too, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect has not been caught.

It also comes one day after a meat cleaver-wielding maniac slashed a man in the head and body during a fit of road-rage fury in College Point, Queens, law enforcement sources said.

The other driver, behind the wheel of a Toyota, became enraged and stabbed the victim in the back of the head, left arm and chest with the serrated weapon, according to authorities and sources…

Did Paul ever meet Jesus in person? | GotQuestions.org

Reconsidering early church history challenges what we often picture. First Corinthians 9:16 on seeing Christ reminds us that God uses our messy timing.

We often wonder if he watched the Messiah in Jerusalem before Calvary, or if he only witnessed the Savior after the Damascus Road.

Looking closely at his interactions with Herod Agrippa in Acts 26:26 and the tragic stoning of Stephen offers real comfort for our own spiritual journeys.

Instead of worrying about physical proof, we can find genuine rest trusting the Lord to reveal Himself exactly when we need Him most.

Catholic churches in Minnesota ending Sunday Mass, citing low attendance, priest shortage

Seven Catholic churches in northwest Minnesota will stop holding Sunday Mass.

The diocese has been seeing declining attendance at the services, as well as a shortage of priests.

Last fall, Bishop Andrew Cozzens began meeting with parishes to come up with a long-term plan for the diocese.

The seven churches are St. Philip in Falun, St. Mary in Badger, St. Francis Xavier in Okless, St. Ann in Goodridge,, St. Francis of Assisi in Fisher, St. Mary in Euclid and St. Joseph in Oslo, the Grand Forks Herald reported.

This will bring the total number of parishes down from 65 to 58. Cozzens said that half of the diocese’s 32 priests will be eligible to retire over the next decade.

The diocese will begin looking at the parishes on the southern side of the state this fall, with the goal of running the diocese on 25 priests.

ICC chief prosecutor removed from post over sexual misconduct allegations: report

Nearly two years after sexual misconduct allegations were lobbed at the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, member state representatives voted to remove him on Friday.

British barrister Karim Khah was accused of sexual misconduct with a female aide, allegations he has denied, the Associated Press reported.

He was formally removed from his duties at the ICC in June after the executive committee of the court’s oversight body produced a report alleging he had committed “serious misconduct.”

The vote, which took place during a special meeting in New York, was the first time the body has removed a chief prosecutor from the office.

Federal appeals rules in favor of employee who was fired after refusing COVID vaccination

A worker speaks against vaccine mandates in a courtroom filled with supporters and officials.

Afederal appeals court today ruled in favor of Mimi Weiss, a 20-year Kaiser Permanente employee who was fired after requesting a religious exemption from the companyโ€™s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Weiss, a fully remote worker, initially received approval for her exemption, but Kaiser later revoked it after questioning her about her faith and medical history. Kaiser then fired her after over two decades of service, and Weiss filed a federal lawsuit against the healthcare giant.

In its unanimous opinion today, the court rejected Kaiserโ€™s claim that Weiss had not adequately explained her religious objection.

Judge Danielle Forrest warned that demanding more explanation than the law requires โ€œwould permit an employer to delve into the religious practices of an employee in order to determine whether religion mandates the employeeโ€™s adherence.โ€

The court also issued a 2-1 memorandum opinion ruling for Weiss on her state law privacy claims.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services deferred $867.5 million from California and $199 million from Minnesota on July 21, citing rapid spending growth and high-risk claims flagged by AI analytics. These temporary holds target potential fraud in areas like in-home care and require states to submit proof for release. The action aligns with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, led by Vice President JD Vance, which also noted an FBI arrest in a $547 million scheme and new checks blocking payments to deceased individuals. Officials frame it as protecting taxpayers and vulnerable patients from waste.

Trump says US will investigate EU trade practices, claiming the bloc unfairly fined tech giants

The United States will open a formal investigation into the European Unionโ€™s trade practices, President Donald Trump said on Friday, claiming the bloc has unfairly levied billions of dollars of fines against Google, Apple and other U.S. tech giants.

The Republican president made the announcement a day after the EU hit Google with a fine of 890 million euros, or $1 billion, after it said the technology behemoth broke digital antitrust regulations by setting up Google Play and its ubiquitous search engine to corral consumers toward its own services and apps to the detriment of competitors.

In a lengthy post on social media, Trump said he has warned the EU about its practice of fining U.S. tech companies. He named Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon and others.

โ€œThe United States of America is not a โ€˜PIGGYBANKโ€™ for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!โ€ Trump said, adding that his post should serve as notice of an immediate trade investigation โ€œinto the practice of โ€˜ROBBINGโ€™ American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer.โ€

โ€œThe European Union will pay a very big price for this illegal and highly unethical conduct, which I have consistently warned them about,โ€ he said.

In the post, Trump asserted that the penalties against the companies โ€œwill be entirely reversedโ€ and predicted โ€œa substantial TARIFFโ€ would be placed on the EU โ€œat the earliest possible moment.โ€

โ€œStay tuned!โ€ he said.

Trumpโ€™s move comes a day after the White House announced double-digit tariffs on imports from more than 60 countries, accusing them of inadequately enforcing bans on goods produced by forced labor.

The new tariffs replace temporary 10% worldwide import taxes that Trump imposed after the Supreme Court struck down his biggest tariffs.

The new tariffs are being implemented using Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which permits the president to impose import taxes and other sanctions against countries found to engage in โ€œunjustifiable,โ€ โ€œunreasonableโ€ or โ€œdiscriminatoryโ€ trade practices.

The EUโ€™s billion-dollar fine against Google was the latest major crackdown on Big Tech by Brussels, which has led the world in reining in some of the worldโ€™s largest companies from Silicon Valley to Beijing….

Trump: If Russia or China help Iran, โ€˜it would be very bad for themโ€™

President Donald Trump said Friday that he does not believe Russia or China are helping Iran. Trump, on Truth Social, said China vowed not to help Iran:

President Xi, at our recent meeting in Beijing, China, told me that he would not, under any circumstances, give or sell Weapons to the Islamic Republic of Iran โ€” And that statement included Chinese Companies. Considering our relationship, I take him at his word and, besides, l am doing him very big favors, also. Likewise, President Putin, despite the horrible War going on in Ukraine (The relationship remains, as it does with President Zelenskyy), told me that he would not sell Weapons to Iran. He understands that I do not sell Weapons to Ukraine, but to NATO Countries. They pay full price, and how those Weapons are distributed, I have no idea. Therefore, two major Countries that people speak of often in terms of Iran are, in my opinion, not participating. If they did, it would be very bad for them โ€” Certainly not in their best interests. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Reports Thursday said sources in the intelligence community were concerned Russia might be aiding Iran. The foundation of those concerns reportedly was Iranโ€™s enhanced targeting ability of CIA facilities.

Kuwait is reporting that its air defenses are intercepting more Iranian attacks Friday.

Those attacks come after a drone crashed near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq on Friday, setting off a temporary stop to flights as multiple explosions were reported near a military base hosting U.S. troops.

Two security sources told Reuters the drone crashed near the airport, where crews worked to contain a fire. No casualties have been reported so far.

An AP journalist in Erbil said at least seven explosions were heard starting around 9:30 a.m. local time, with black smoke rising near the base….

Deadly Texas smuggling operation left victims gasping for air: Feds

Aerial view of Laredo, Texas on a sunny afternoon over looking a freight train yardAuthorization was obtained from the FAA for this operation in restricted airspace.

Federal prosecutors on Friday detailed a deadly human trafficking ring in which immigrants were moved across the U.S.-Mexico border and then transported in Union Pacific railroad cars, which eventually led to the deaths of seven people from Mexico and Honduras who were left gasping for air before they died in the sweltering Texas heat.

Nine of 11 people targeted by federal prosecutors are in custody, Justice Department officials announced, months after the bodies of six immigrants were discovered inside a rail car in Laredo, Texas.

The body of a seventh man was found near train tracks in San Antonio. NewsNation previously reported that the deaths were linked to a larger human smuggling operation.

Investigators previously announced that the death of the man found in San Antonio was also tied to the same smuggling operation.

The 11 defendants, including Karina Garcia, face charges of conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants that resulted in death and aiding and abetting the transportation of illegal immigrants resulting in death, court documents show.

Four of those indicted are U.S. citizens, two lawful U.S. permanent residents and five undocumented immigrants, federal prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that the victims participated in a human smuggling organization that illegally used the train system to smuggle illegal immigrants further into the United States after illegally crossing them from Mexico.

The ring began operating in April 2023 and continued through May of this year, when the bodies were discovered inside the storage container in Laredo.

โ€œItโ€™s May and itโ€™s Texas and ultimately, very hard to survive in an un-air-conditioned, sealed container with โ€ฆ the temperature being what it was on that day,โ€ U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas Justin Simmons said at a news conference Friday.

The indictment indicates that each illegal immigrant paid what equated to between $ 1,500 and $ 10,000 to individuals in Honduras, Mexico, the United States, and elsewhere to be transported illegally into the interior of the United States.

Once smuggled into the United States, immigrants were often housed in stash houses or in the brush along the Union Pacific tracks in Del Rio, which sits on the banks of the Rio Grande River.

Members of the smuggling organization would load immigrants into shipping containers, which allowed those who had been smuggled into the country to travel deeper into the U.S. without detection, court documents show…..

Report: Iranโ€™s Terrorist IRGC Flew into Yemen to Help Houthis Block Shipping

Iran flew IRGC commanders, missile gear to Yemen's Houthis: Report

The Houthi jihadist terror organization โ€“ whose slogan is โ€œAllahu Akbar, Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse Upon the Jews, Victory to Islamโ€ โ€“ announced this week that they would impose a โ€œmaritime banโ€ on ships associated with Saudi Arabia in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, allegedly in retaliation for a Saudi airstrike on the airport in Sanaโ€™a, the national capital the Houthis have occupied since 2014.

Reports at the time indicated that the Saudi military had targeted the airport as a Houthi delegation returned from the nationwide funeral services in Iran for late dictator Ali Khamenei, allegedly as a way to prevent the Iranian regime from helping restock the Houthisโ€™ missile and other weapons supplies.

The Reuters report appears to verify that the Saudi government was correct to believe the returning flight from Iran was carrying military support.

Reutersโ€™ sources told the outlet that the flight from Tehran to Sanaโ€™a on July 13 was carrying โ€œbetween 10 and 21 IRGC personnel, including senior commandersโ€ and military equipment, potentially to boost the Houthisโ€™ missile capabilities.

Notably, two of Reutersโ€™ four sources โ€“ Information Minister Moammar al-Iryani of the legitimate Yemeni government and security analyst Mzahem Alsaloum, went on the record with their information.

The two anonymous sources were identified as Iranian.

โ€œThe IRGC commanders travelled there to support Houthi operations and provide training on new โ€‹missile systems,โ€ one of the anonymous Iranian sources confirmed.

The on-the-record sources said the flight was carrying โ€œcomponents related to short- and medium-range missiles and dronesโ€ in addition to IRGC commanders, intended to boost the Houthisโ€™ ability to participate in the ongoing Middle East conflict.

โ€œTheir mission is to strengthen the militiasโ€™ military capabilities and prepare them to threaten international maritime security in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait,โ€ al-Iryani, the information minister, reportedly said…

U.S. Tariffs 60 Trading Partners, Including Europe and China, for Slave Labor Product Imports

President Donald J. Trump

โ€œPresident Trump recognizes that decades of moral suasion have not eradicated forced labor from global supply chains,โ€ Greer said. โ€œThe United States has had a forced labor import ban for nearly a century, and rigorously enforces it; itโ€™s well past time for our trading partners to do the same.โ€

โ€œTodayโ€™s action will begin to correct what is both a human rights abuse and distortive trade practice to improve the welfare of workers everywhere.  I am encouraged by the trading partners who have moved quickly to adopt forced labor import prohibitions, and look forward to ensuring their effective enforcement,โ€ he said.

While no universally recognized definition exists in international law for slavery, the United Nations treats forced labor as a form of modern slavery, alongside human trafficking, sex slavery, and situations such as forced marriages.

Under the heading โ€œWhat is Modern Slavery?โ€ the State Department defines forced labor as a form of slavery:

Forced labor, sometimes also referred to as labor trafficking, encompasses the range of activities โ€“ recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining โ€“ involved when a person uses force or physical threats, psychological coercion, abuse of the legal process, deception, or other coercive means to compel someone to work.

Greer said the tariff action was taken at President Donald Trumpโ€™s direction after extensive investigations, two rounds of public hearings, and โ€œengagement with our trading partners to remedy these longstanding concerns.โ€…

Exclusive: Bosnian National Accused of War Crimes Indicted for Lying to Obtain American Citizenship

66-year-oldย Miran Kostic ofย Bosnia, DOJ

This week, a federal grand jury in Boise, Idaho, indicted 66-year-old Miran Kostic of Bosnia and Herzegovina on charges that he repeatedly lied to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officials, as well as to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), about his past as a high-level official in the former Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia (APZB), where he allegedly participated in war crimes.

According to the indictment, as an APZB official Kostic beat prisoners, including pistol-whipping them, hitting them with wood clubs and stakes, punching them, kicking them, and causing them to lose consciousness.

In other instances, the indictment alleges that Kostic forced prisoners to beat each other and ordered other APZB officials to beat prisoners.

None of this, the indictment says, was disclosed to U.S. officials in Kosticโ€™s naturalization application and interviews.

โ€œMiran Kostic benefited from U.S. residency for decades and ultimately attempted to become a naturalized citizen, all while concealing the human rights abuses he committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.โ€ Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said in a statement.

โ€œIndividuals who commit atrocities abroad and lie to immigration authorities to seek safe haven in the United States will be investigated and prosecuted,โ€ Duva said. โ€œThe integrity of our naturalization process and the enforcement of our immigration laws are paramount concerns.โ€..

Cops fume as Mamdani urges New Yorkers to take to streets to protest Netanyahu after arrest fail: โ€˜Edge of chaosโ€™

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is telling New Yorkers to take to the streets to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits the Big Apple โ€” and it has NYPD cops fuming.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is telling New Yorkers to take to the streets to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits the Big Apple โ€” and it has NYPD cops fuming.

New Yorkโ€™s Finest just put in superhuman duty to keep the five boroughs safe during the FIFA World Cup, the Knicks NBA title, Independence Day and a massive America 250 celebration that brought millions into the city โ€” and now will have to keep their guards up as the lefty mayor fans the flames.

โ€œThe mayorโ€™s activist posturing puts police officers on the street in a terrible position,โ€ NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said.

โ€œProtests during the UN General Assembly are nothing new, but when the mayor of the city is actively calling for demonstrations, violent agitators will assume they have permission to cause as much havoc as possible.

โ€œThose same agitators know that the NYPDโ€™s protest response is already hamstrung by the dangerous lawsuit settlement the city signed over the PBAโ€™s opposition,โ€ Hendry said. โ€œThe mayorโ€™s heated rhetoric could be enough to push demonstrations over the edge into chaos.โ€

Mamdani has been obsessing over Netanyahu since he was on the campaign trail last year, and vowed to have him arrested if he set foot in the city due to a 2024 warrant from the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Gaza.

The mayor was forced to backtrack this week by admitting he didnโ€™t have the juice to do it โ€” but urged New Yorkers to protest Netanyahu, which means more work for the NYPD.

โ€œThis is a city where, if anyone feels a level of frustration or opposition, protest is something that we will always respect,โ€ he told reporters at City Hall this week. โ€œThat New Yorkers can express themselves, whether they are in support or in opposition, no matter on whatever topic.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ve always said that when we respect our Constitution, we also respect our First Amendment.โ€

New Yorkโ€™s Finest already went above and beyond to handle the unprecedented tourist rush this summer, and were put on 12-hour shifts to handle the extra duty โ€” which they pulled off flawlessly….

Teacher who served as GOP state lawmaker allegedly used Roblox to lure student into sexual relationship

David Elliott Pritt, 36, a West Virginia lawmaker and former teacher, was arrested on federal charges alleging he used Roblox and social media to entice a 15-year-old student into a sexual relationship, according to court documents. Authorities say the alleged abuse began while the girl was his student. (Carter County Detention Center)

The investigation began after the girl’s family reported the allegations to law enforcement July 9, according to an affidavit obtained and reviewed by Fox News Digital.

The girl told investigators Pritt first contacted her while she was an eighth grade student during the 2024-25 school year, when he taught middle school in Fayette County.

Their conversations allegedly began on Roblox before moving to the social media app Snapchat.

According to the affidavit, the conversations became increasingly personal, and Pritt eventually told the girl he loved her.

During the summer of 2025, Pritt allegedly sent the girl a sexually explicit photograph of himself over Snapchat and requested nude photographs from her. The girl told investigators she complied.

After both moved to the local high school, the girl alleged Pritt repeatedly asked her to meet him in his classroom, where she said she performed sexual acts on him approximately five to 10 times.

The final encounter allegedly occurred around December 2025 or January 2026.

According to the affidavit, Pritt continued requesting sexually explicit photographs through July 2026 and urged the girl not to tell anyone about their relationship.

Investigators said he warned her police would seize their phones and “open up hell in our lives.” He also allegedly said the allegations “would be in the news” before adding, “I would lose my entire life.”

Pritt has represented Fayette County’s District 50 in the West Virginia House of Delegates since 2022. He was elected as a Democrat before switching to the Republican Party in 2023…

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone that entered the countryโ€™s airspace without authorization Friday, marking the first time the NATO member has intercepted and destroyed a drone inside its national airspace, authorities said.

Romanian officials have not yet identified the droneโ€™s origin or purpose.

Romaniaโ€™s army chief said pilots described it as appearing to be a Shahed-type drone, Reuters reported, the Iran-designed attack drone widely used by Russia against Ukraine.

The incident carries direct implications for the U.S. and its NATO allies, as repeated airspace breaches along the allianceโ€™s eastern flank have fueled concerns that Russiaโ€™s war in Ukraine could spill across NATO borders.

Romania, which borders Ukraine, has reported dozens of drone incursions or debris incidents since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

“Today at 11:02 AM, a Romanian pilot flying an F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone that had entered our airspace without authorization โ€” the first time a drone has been intercepted and destroyed in Romania’s national airspace,” ศšoiu wrote on X.

ศšoiu previously told Fox News Digital July 2 that Russian drones had been detected inside Ukraine roughly 19 miles from Romaniaโ€™s border, prompting two Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets operating from Romaniaโ€™s 86th Air Base in Feteศ™ti to scramble under NATOโ€™s Enhanced Air Policing mission.

A Romanian Air Force IAR 330 Puma helicopter was also deployed, she said at the time….

Could this African nation become Trump’s next terror target as jihadists close in on power?

The U.S. is reportedly considering airstrikes against al Qaeda-linked terrorists in Mali, according to regional analysts and recent media reports.

The military junta that has been running this West African country in the Sahel region since coups in both 2020 and 2021 turned away from France and the U.S. to get military protection from Russia and its Africa Corps mercenaries against jihadist groups.

But now the largest of these groups, Jamaโ€™at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which has Maliโ€™s capital under siege, is credited, along with another group, for killing 50 Malian soldiers this month, for the death of the countryโ€™s defense minister earlier this year and has reportedly sent battalions of Russian soldiers retreating on at least two occasions this year.

JNIM is said to want to change the country into an Islamist Jihadist state. If they succeed, Mali would be the first country in the world to be run by a jihadist group.

The organization was designated officially as a Foreign Terrorist Organization during the first Trump administration in 2018.

Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist groups are also operating freely in Mali, and are linked to terror groups in neighboring Nigeria.

A State Department official didnโ€™t respond to a Washington Post report that the U.S. is considering strikes against JNIM in Mali, but used strong language Thursday when talking to Fox News Digital, leading analysts to suggest the time for talking may be over.

“The United States unequivocally condemns the terrorist activity in Mali,” the official said, adding, “in the Sahel, the United States is committed to promoting regional ownership and cooperation against terrorist threats, and monitoring indicators and warnings of threats to our homeland.”…
