Death with indignity? Authorities probe alleged deception, coercion in Canadian assisted suicides
ess than two weeks after a bipartisan group of congressional lawmakers asked Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to exercise stronger oversight of physician-assisted suicide in hospice care in states where it is legal, a horror story of alleged deception and coercion has surfaced with much fanfare in neighboring Canada.
Brigitte Kranendonk alleges a rest home gave her grandmother, Brigitte Stegemann, a surprise — and shoddy — assessment for “medical assistance in dying” (MAID) while her “primary advocate” Kranendonk and her husband were on vacation.
Then followed up by an assessment with questions purportedly so vague the patient couldn’t understand she was being offered suicide.
Gruesome death scene reported
Stegemann’s assisted suicide was botched so badly that not only was her family asked to “actively participate” in an outcome they opposed — the premature death of their “Oma” — but the octogenarian, her bedding and the “surrounding area” were covered in blood from the lethal injection at her death, according to Kranendonk’s original account on Facebook in July.
The story got little attention for two months, covered primarily by Canadian investigative journalist Kelsi Sheren and Christian and pro-life media.
But since it exploded Sunday in the British Daily Mail, with Kranendonk providing a more detailed and painful personal account, naming the facility and disclosing investigations by provincial and local authorities, the world is finally paying attention to a narrative of the banality of evil in the name of personal dignity.
Canadian law does not require a terminal diagnosis to commit assisted suicide
Canada leads the world in MAID deaths, which comprise about 5% of the country’s total deaths, and since 2021 the law does not require a terminal diagnosis to receive the procedure, prompting applications from younger people suffering from “long COVID” and neurological conditions.
It has ended 100,000 lives since MAID’s legalization 10 years ago.
Kranendonk’s troubling story is far from the first.
The Medical Assistance in Dying Death Review Committee at the Ontario coroner’s office, which is now investigating Kranendonk’s allegations, shared a case overview of “Mrs. B” in a 2024 report, with similar allegations.
Also in her 80s, “Mrs. B” opted for palliative care following complications from heart surgery and quickly disavowed to her first assessor that she wanted MAID, “citing personal and religious values and beliefs,” yet when her husband experienced “caregiver burnout” and asked for a second “urgent” MAID assessment, the new assessor greenlit her.
The first MAID assessor objected to the “urgency” basis, citing “the possibility of coercion or undue influence” from “Mrs. B”‘s husband, but the MAID provider shut that person out, secured a third assessment and “Mrs. B” was dead the same day, the report says.
“Most members believed the short timeline did not allow all aspects of “Mrs. B”’s social and end-of-life circumstances and care needs to be explored,” it said.
“This woman’s life was taken against her will. That’s called murder,” Canadian member of Parliament Rachel Thomas said on X when the report belatedly got noticed in early 2026.

Trump Backs Diesel Export Ban as Prices Hit Record Highs
President Trump has declared his support for a potential ban on diesel fuel exports amid record-breaking prices at the pump.
“I’ve said let’s not send out the diesel. We make a lot of diesel … I’ve called for it. I’ve called for it within my people,” Trump said, as quoted by Reuters, on the sidelines of this week’s UN General Assembly.
The comment follows a statement by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the administration was mulling over the effectiveness of such a ban on exports, and whether it would be partial or total.
The national U.S. average for diesel hit $6.5276 on Tuesday, according to AAA.
The idea of a ban on diesel exports emerged earlier this month, with Rep. Tim Burchett tabling a bill to that effect last week. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has backed the proposal.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum oppose it as a bad idea that would ultimately backfire, but the very fact that some legislators considered an export ban suggests the supply situation is pretty grim even for the world’s largest oil producer.
“American fuel should stay home with Americans,” Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by Reuters. “The cost of diesel is just too damn high. I’m calling for a temporary pause of American diesel exports so that we can rebuild our reserves ahead of winter and put American and Alaskan families first.”
With the U.S. president signaling support for such a move, the chances of a ban have improved.
Trump earlier blamed the surge in U.S. diesel prices on Ukraine and its drone attacks on Russian refineries, calling on President Zelensky to stop the attacks so prices can come down.
As a result of the refinery attacks, Russia has instituted a ban on its own diesel fuel exports, contributing to a major squeeze as diesel exports from the Middle East get compromised by the U.S. and Israeli war with Iran.
Amazon Blocks Meta’s AI Shopping Agent As Tech Giants Wall Off Commerce
Meta’s AI shopping agent Muse tried to buy something on Amazon last weekend, and Amazon slammed the door—another sign that the tech giants are building walled gardens around autonomous commerce while the American consumer gets locked out of the loop.
This matters because AI agents are about to become the new middlemen for everything you buy online.
When those agents can’t talk to each other across platforms, you don’t get competition—you get fiefdoms. Each company walls off its customers, and the only “choice” left is which lord you serve.
Entrepreneur reported that when users directed Muse to complete a purchase on Amazon, they received an error message:
“Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
Amazon’s stated rationale is partly practical—if Muse botches an order, Amazon catches the heat from angry customers and vendors.
Muse boasts one of the lower hallucination rates among AI models, but “lower” isn’t “zero,” and Amazon would rather wait a few release cycles before letting a rival’s agent loose on its checkout page.
But the deeper story is rivalry, not caution. Amazon has its own AI models.
Rolling out the welcome mat for a competitor’s agent means handing over the last mile of the commercial relationship—the transaction itself—to someone else’s software.
Entrepreneur framed this as “a small but telling sign that the cross-pollination between walled garden AI systems isn’t bearing fruit.” Translation: the gardens are getting taller.
Meanwhile, Seeking Alpha’s Andrew—a former professional trader who discloses a long position in Meta—projects Muse will unlock “agentic commerce” revenue streams beyond advertising, with partnerships already in place at Shopify and PayPal.
He forecasts 20%+ annual revenue growth and a potential $6.2 trillion Meta market cap by 2030. Follow the money: when an analyst holding the stock tells you it’s a “Strong Buy,” read the disclosure first.
What neither outlet addresses is the stake for the person actually spending the money.

DHS Rebuts Reports Surrounding Texas ICE Shooting In New Fact Sheet
The Department of Homeland Security issued a formal statement responding to public claims regarding an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer-involved shooting of an illegal immigrant in Austin, Texas.
The agency addressed reports concerning the incident and the individual’s legal and medical status, framing the release around a series of disputed claims.
“Sanctuary politicians and the mainstream media have wasted no time in spreading lies about an ICE officer-involved shooting of an illegal alien in Austin, Texas,” said Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “Contrary to their claims, this person is an illegal alien who has no legal status to be here and has been given some of the best medical care he’s ever received in his life. No amount of smears and false narratives will slow down ICE from doing its job by removing dangerous illegal aliens from our communities and making America safe again. Sanctuary politicians may continue to shamelessly protect illegal aliens, but the Trump Administration will remain focused on protecting the American people.”
According to the DHS fact sheet, the individual involved entered the country without legal status during the Biden administration and was subject to a final order of removal issued in absentia by a Department of Justice immigration judge.
The agency stated that the individual’s work permit expired in 2025 and noted that work authorization does not confer legal immigration status.
DHS also confirmed the encounter was not random, stating the individual was the subject of a targeted vehicle stop based on immigration status.

When Patricia Leidl testified at the Allison Inquiry in Ottawa on September 10, 2026, she brought a credential that no one else in the room could claim.
She had spent years inside the World Health Organization writing about vaccines.
She had drafted the WHO’s State of the World Vaccines and Immunization report. She had authored the WHO’s Report on Infectious Diseases on antimicrobial resistance. She had run communications for the HIV/AIDS Department at WHO Geneva, managing a team responsible for how the organization’s vaccine messaging reached policymakers, donors, and the public worldwide.
She is not anti-vaccine. She said so explicitly, and the distinction matters. She is a 64-year-old communications professional, journalist, and artist from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, who spent four decades working in human rights and women’s rights, including deployments to Afghanistan and Yemen for USAID. She co-authored The Hillary Doctrine: Sex and American Foreign Policy with Valerie M. Hudson, a book that won a Prose Prize and a Kirkus Starred Review. She served as a speechwriter for Yemeni Nobel Laureate Tawakkol Karman. She has spoken at the Annapolis War College.
And she was destroyed by a vaccine the WHO promoted.
What She Knew Before She Took the Shot
Leidl told the inquiry that she had been suspicious of the COVID narrative from the beginning. She was listening to the CBC announce daily death tolls, and she knew the numbers needed to be contextualized as a rate per 100,000. When you did that math, she said, the death rate was, in fact, similar to seasonal flu.
She took the vaccine anyway. She was between contracts, up for a job in Europe, and she needed to be vaccinated to travel. The coercion was practical, not ideological. She received her first dose with no incident. Five weeks later, on June 10, 2021, she received the second.
Seven days after that, she woke up in pain, got out of bed, and collapsed on the floor.
The Irony She Brought to the Inquiry
Here is the detail the National Post did not quote, and it is the one that matters most.
When a member of Parliament asked Leidl about her work at WHO, she described the publications she had drafted. One of them was the State of the World Vaccines, published in 2002. And while writing that book, she wrote a section on coronavirus. Her assessment at the time, based on the established institutional knowledge: was that there could never be an effective vaccine against a coronavirus because it mutates too quickly.
She told the inquiry that she was very surprised when there was suddenly a vaccine for a coronavirus. Most vaccines take between seven and fifteen years to come to market. This one came in six months, on a novel mRNA platform, for a virus that presumably mutates too quickly for a vaccine to be effective.
This is not a layperson’s speculation. This is the woman the UN, World Health Organization, hired to write about vaccine science, telling a parliamentary inquiry that the institutional knowledge she was paid to communicate said the very thing the institution later discarded. The WHO published her work. The WHO knew coronavirus vaccines were considered unworkable. The WHO promoted one anyway.
What Happened to Her
The list of symptoms Leidl described is long, and she is precise about each one. A racing heart. Swollen face, hands, and feet. Every nerve ending in her body seeming to shrink with pain. A migraine that lasted eight years. She is almost completely deaf in her right ear. She developed POTS, which she had never heard of before. She went from 130 pounds to 200 pounds within two months. She developed boils from her neck to her knees. Her period returned 12 years after menopause. Her breasts swelled three sizes, which has not normalized. She has bilateral tendinopathy, arteriosclerosis, light sensitivity, tinnitus, chronic gastritis, and cognitive decline.
She was, the week before the vaccine, an extreme hiker. She had completed a 26-day trek. The week after, she could barely walk.
She has spent approximately $250,000 over five years trying to get well, on hyperbaric oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, supplements, PRP injections, lumbar injections, spinal injections, and pain clinic treatment, most of it not covered by insurance.
She had to forfeit the job in Europe. ….
